Remington Model 540's

Post by bandit1250 » Sat May 14, 2022 5:23 pm

Recently added a third 540 Remington to my collection of rimfire rifles. This last one is the 540XR Junior rifle. It was built for smaller shooters with the shorter length of pull. It can be adjusted to a little over 12" pull and can adjust the butt plate out to over 14" length. These rifles could be considered sleeper rifles in that they are as accurate as rifles that sell for much more money. I shoot with other shooters that shoot Anschutz, Coopers, 52 Winchesters and factory barreled Model 40X Remington's. These rifles hang in there very well with the higher priced rifles and surprise the guy's shooting the other brands. The 540's have very tight match chambers and are solid bottom rigid actions with some good barrels for being factory Remington. I have the triggers adjusted to 8-9 ounces. The first 540X I believe came out in 1968 and was listed at $89.95. I have shot many 1/4-3/8" groups with the first two 540's and the junior so far looks to be equal in accuracy as the first two I bought. I have fixed 12X Leupold's on two and the Junior has a fixed Leupold 16X for now. My shooting partner shoots an Anshutz MPR and a single shot heavy Cooper and a custom Falcon and none except the Anschutz eject empty rounds consistent and the 540's all send an empty casing over on to the next bench while my friend is tilting his rifles to the side to dump the empty round clear of the action. He always shakes his head and says "the older guns are built better." I believe when my wife shoots the Junior model she will claim it as hers. I can shoot groups as small as his rifles with the 540's but he can do better on the really small dots with his 45X Leupold scope and shooting off a $1200 rest and me shooting from home made sand bags because I have to move the rifle to follow the rows across the target and his rest moves to follow the rows and doesn't torque the rifle like my sand bags will. I have a lot of fun with the 540's. BigAl will post a picture later of the rifles. Thanks to BigAl. Have a nice week end a be safe. bandit 1250

Bandit has alot of nice 22 rifles. I wish I had one of those fancy CZ's he has.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

The 540s and the CZs are both awesome guns. Thanks for sharing, bandit and for helping out, Al.

We've been meaning to renew our shooting club membership and get out to the range to burn some powder. Way, way overdue for us.

Be prepared for sticker shock Hatch as I dont believe those models are available anymore so you would need to find a used one. I think Bandit might have half of the ones they made.

CZ made a thousand of the Grand Finale 452's. Once in a while a NIB one will turn up at a auction. I recently had a offer of $3000 for the two with the consecutive numbers. I bought them two years apart in different states and were consecutive numbers. If I wouldn't have memorized the serial numbers of the four we had I wouldn't have known it was a number consecutive to one we already had. That is how we ended up with number five. We bought the first four from money from selling off 20 Marlin 39 A's that we quit shooting because we got back into shooting bolt action 22's. We still have 6 Marlin 39 A's if we want to shoot lever rifles plus my Henry Frontier. Here is a picture of all five Grand Finales. The center one and the one at the top are consecutive numbered.

I should have bought one when I had the chance. Not the first time I've sung that tune. :)

I hear you Al, there’s a 452 (not even close to what bandit has I believe) for sale locally for 1K. It does have some nice upgrades including a Basix trigger and according to the target in the ad it shoots incredible groups with many different types of ammo.

I went back to the ad to capture the target picture and of course the rifle is sold. Bummer for me but great for the seller.

Here’s the target but I don’t recall the distance he was shooting.
