Mossberg 464

Post by Redthies » Sun May 23, 2021 10:11 am

Anyone ever laid eyes on one of these or shot one? I didn’t even know Mossberg made a lever action until today. I’m looking for a “modestly priced” .30-30 to gift to my hunting partner. He was my apprentice, and helps me out all the time on our property so I want to do something nice for him. If he helped a bit more, he might have gotten a Henry

Before you all get misty eyed at my benevolence, I am also motivated by the amount of meat loss on the deer he shoots with his .30-06 at the close ranges we have in the PNW. Both deer he took last year were at about 20 yards, and we lost one front quarter off each animal, as well as the hearts in both. We share our take equally so what he shoots impacts me as much as his target.

I did read a review that says the 464 is more or less as good as the basic Marlin 336. It looks to be a knock off of the Winchester ‘94 action?

Thanks for any insights you might have.

Interesting...would like to hear more about that one and hopefully see a pic.
Sorry I have nothing to offer about said rifle.

Wish I could help, but those Mossberg levers are very rare in this area. Have never even seen one.

Very much agree on the 30-30 for your needs, though. Still a very, very popular choice for deer hunters in our north woods for the same reasons.

Consider a henry single shot in 3030 or 44 mag. Both excellent short range deer cartridges. Price is right and still a Henry

No first hand experience firing one, but a local gun shop near me had one on the rack. I handled it and gave it a quick once oner and for the price it wasn't too bad. Don't expect nice oiled walnut stock or perfect metal fit, but overall its looked just fine. I would call it a very nice utility gun. The action seemed smooth enough and my bet is it would improve with age.

Mossberg has alway made a decent firearm. Not fancy but functional. I still have (or should I say my son has) an old Mossberg 500 shotgun that served me for 45 years. I dragged that through the woods in all sorts of conditions and it functions just fine today.

Mossberg, IMO makes a decent product. They would not have endured the test of time if not.
Back when my Dad enrolled my brother and I in NRA sanctioned courses and competition, my older brother, ( god rest his soul ) had a Mossberg single shot .22lr. It was a nice rifle. That was about 1966. I had a Savege/Anschutz.
Wish I knew what happened to the Mossberg after his passing.

A friend in Idaho has one of those 464's. It ain't bad at all. Very similar to a Mod 94, and it shot just as accurately as most '94 do. Light, handy, I think it would suffice nicely. I say go for it.

Thanks for the input guys. I do like my 500 and 930 Waterfowl Pro. They are definitely not Henry good, but they are certainly worth every penny I spent on them and more. I think I’ll see how low he will go on price...
