Bangs head on desk, finding a 19 or 20" threaded 45-70

Post by DsGrouse » Mon Jun 08, 2026 7:51 am

I'd like to round out my collection with a second ruger marlin 1895 in 45-70. But i want 19 or 20" with threaded barrel in stainless.

Smith, henry, marlin are all rare as hens teeth as of now.

Never seen a stainless 45-70 Henry. πŸ€”
And the Smith 1854, I believe are only made in pistol calibers.
Good luck.

I am wrong about the 1854, it does come in a couple of rifle calibers. Specs say it has a 19.25" barrel.
Best of luck to you on the search.

Henry has the all-weather, but it doesn't come with a threaded barrel. I don't think it is stainless. Iirc, it is a hard nickel coating.

I ended up finding a Marlin 1895 guide gun, blued, but I was able to get a 19.1" and threaded barrel. I spent the morning looking for one of the 1895 SBLs within 500 miles, calls, web searches, etc.

I wasn't able to find one other than GB. All of the East Coast wholesalers I was able to check were also out.

It's satin hard chrome plated.

To me, blued steel and walnut is hard to beat, but we all know what they say about opinions.
Congrats on the new purchase.

I live in the south, going from the ac to swamp air is hard ob blued guns, as is coming in from rainy weather to warm house.

I find the hard chrome, nitride, np3 etc ro generally give me more time to wipe everything down

I got it on paper. It definately packs a whollop. I need to get it sighted in at 50 yds, then at 100. As i mentioned in the reloading thread, i've got some clean up to do on my reloading space. Then i can get back to trying my hand at loading 45-70

You sure do have a wide variety of options to play with. Good deal, I like reading about them.
And I haven't read about np3 in a long time, always wanted to get something done with that.
Do you have np3 on something, and if so, how do you like it?

I have in the past, an old HKp7, and another sig 220 that had been sent off after the factory finished suffered. I like it a lot. It was durable and slick. The closest thing now is Berretta's Nistan finish. I think this finish is fabulous

I also made a misstatement. I said the all-weather was the cat's meow for looks. While I don't mind the looks (I do like silver and black), I meant in terms of a working man's durability. I like the damp weather resistance of over-blued steel. It wipes down easier than the stainless guns I own.

If at some point you pursue a Henry All Weather, maybe buy it new. Some of the older ones when they first came out had bolt sticking problems.
