Ruger 10-22 vs. M&P 15-22 SPORT 22LR
Ruger 10-22 vs. M&P 15-22 SPORT 22LR
I've decided to retire my old Savage 6A (not for sale), and am considering buying a new .22lr semi auto. The above rifles are on my short list. They both get good reviews and are within my budget. Which one would you recommend for general plinking and occasional varmint eradication out to typical ranges? Is either or both particular about common .22lr ammo (weight, velocity, etc.)?

Ive owned both Gene. The M&P shoots very good and I liked it. But loading the magazine on those can be a pain and if you don’t get the ammo in there just right they jam. There isnt any (unless one has just come out) speed loaders for their mags. The Ruger has better magazines I think and you can get speed loaders for them. I kind of like the 10 round mags of the 10/22 myself as they load quicker and there out of the way. The new 10/22 with the hammer forged barrels is pretty sharp I think. YMMV

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

One other thing which I know isnt on your list of choices I like the Marlin model 60 alot. 15 rounds down the tube and your ready. Mine is very accurate.

My vote would be for the Ruger, based on the very functional and modular design. Out of the box 10/22s can be all over the map as far as accuracy and QC, but you can rebuild any 10/22 with after market parts and end up with a 10/22 that actually has no Ruger parts left. In fact, there are people who intentionally buy the cheapest Ruger 10/22 version they can find at Wally mart because they planned to rebuild it to their liking, anyway.
I did rebuild the pistol version of the 10/22, that being the Charger. With a Kidd 10" barrel, it would consistently do 1/2" at 50 yards with almost anything I fed it. With all the aftermarket parts for Rugers, you can turn a 10/22 into anything you want. I still enjoy our mid-80s Sporter Deluxe, though. Still has all Ruger parts and with just the right ammo and a bit of work on my part, it shoots some amazing groups.
And as Al, mentions, of all the rotary mags I've used on various brands of rimfire, the standard 10 round mag of the 10/22 still beats them all.

For about the same price as the M&P you can get a 10/22 Sporter Deluxe. Action and barrel are basic 10/22 other than the barrel being longer-20” v 18”-but the addition of the checkered walnut stock with swivel studs is nice. The Deluxe also has a rubber butt plate which makes for a more positive shoulder connection while out in the field. Now if you’re just looking for a truck rifle the 10/22 stainless with composite stock is nearly indestructible.

I have to agree with AL on the Model 60.
From most reports are that the 60 is more accurate out of the box than the 10-22.
I've had a couple of the Rugers, and had no real problems with either, they were gifted to the youngins.
I have a fairly new M 60, but sadly I haven't played with it very much.

Back to the Future this morning (bolt action). Couldn't find (locally since I don't buy on-line) either of the 2 rifles I was initially interested in. But I didn't come home empty handed. Bought a Ruger Precision Rifle that was calling to me and the other stuff in the pic. I'll probably pick up a decent scope later on, but the flip ups will do for now. This rifle has an absolutely superb adjustable trigger.

Gunny, you certainly made quite a jump from 10-22 to this piece of firearm artwork. I am very much looking forward to seeing range reports.
