Merry Christmas to me

For a couple of months I have been looking at and thinking about getting a bolt action carbine length rifle in 5.56. No reason, no need, no purpose. Mostly because there was a used Mossberg MVP for sale on our local guntrader site that caught my attention. I stopped in to my LGS back then and they had several available including the Thunder Ranch model of the MVP which I liked the look of. Also available was a Ruger Gunsight Scout in 5.56 and when I compared the Mossbergs to the Ruger it was “no contest”. Of course the Ruger was more expensive. I talked myself out of buying one with the help of the budget this time of the year between paying half-yearly property taxes and pending Christmas. Pat on the back here please. :D

So fast forward to this past week. I needed a scout scope and put a pistol up for sale locally to buy one. I ended up trading the pistol for two scout scopes so had an extra scope. Well you know what that leads to........

In doing my research I found Ruger discontinued the 5.56 Gunsite Scout rifle a few years ago and I didn’t find any available on all the usual online sellers websites. The rifle at my LGS was new (they also had a used one that was pretty beat) and who knows if I would ever find a new one again. So here I am with a scope that has no home and the rifle I am wanting just a few miles away. Well it was just meant to be. I stopped in yesterday and put the Ruger on layaway for 25% down and 90 days to pay it off. Locked up the rifle and saved the budget too. :D

This is a file photo I snatched off the web. I ordered a couple of extra mags that while are still 10 round they are much shorter than the factory mag.

Think you made a great decision on the Ruger. I always tell my wife I didn't buy a new gun....just a new mount for my sight!

Merry Christmas.
I usually just myself trash pick up paid for a year. Guess that depends on when my LGS gets my Henry 357 in.

Yeah, since I sold off all my 41 stuff (dies, ammo, bullets, brass, etc) a few years ago the last thing I wanted to do in these times is to take on a new caliber. I’m nicely set up for .223 in all components and a good selection of factory ammo on hand. I do appreciate you 41 guys, I started out with a S&W M/57 6” blue back in the early 80’s. I bought it because Washington State had just allowed handgun hunting for big game so I thought I would give it a try. Never shot a deer with it but I used it for handgun silhouette shooting in the revolver class and killed lots of steel targets back then. Since then I’ve had a M/657 and a Marlin 1894 FG so I do appreciate the 41 mag.

My next Henry will be just a plain old 30-30. I have my dad’s pre-64 M/94 and I have promised it to my nephew but he can’t have it until I get another 30-30 caliber. Sorry Tony..... :D
