Ok, yeah it's an estimate. But we know there's more now than last year, and the estimates keep going up, so this is probably a reasonable swag. :)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the firearms industry trade association, released the 2017 Firearms Production Report to members. The report compiles the most up to date information based on data sourced from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF’s) Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Export Reports (AFMER). Key findings for public release showed:

The estimated total number of firearms in civilian possession from 1986-2018 is 422.9 million, according to data reported in the ATF’s Firearms Commerce Report in the United States 2019 report and including the preliminary 2018 Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Exportation Report (AFMER) figures.
17,740,000 Modern Sporting Rifles are in private ownership today.
More than half (54%) of all rifles produced in 2017 were modern sporting rifles.
In 2017, 7,901,218 total firearms were produced and imported. Of those, 4,411,923 were pistols and revolvers, 2,821,945 were rifles and 667,350 were shotguns.
An interim 2018 estimate showed a total 7,660,772 total firearms were produced and imported. Of those 4,277,971 were pistols and revolvers, 2,846,757 were rifles and 535,994 were shotguns. Those are interim reports and will be updated as complete information becomes available.
Firearms-ammunition manufacturing accounted for nearly 12,000 employees producing over $4.1 billion in goods shipped in 2017.
An estimated 8.1 billion rounds, of all calibers and gauges, were produced
in 2018 for the U.S. market.

Great article Gunny ! And that does not even touch those of us that choose to load our own !

The numbers stated are kinda mind-boggling to me, and I suspect to many other gun-owners (not to mention the "other guys" ;) ) I guess because we just don't think about the size of the industry all that much - I know I don't. :)

We could probably bump that firearms number up by many millions if we included and 1986, which would encompass 10's of millions of 1911's and other guns, even if we assume that only half of them are functional and still exist. :)

Roger that Gunny, I have the 1911 my Grandfather carried in WWI then gave to my father to carry in WWII in a shadow box in my office. It is clean and good to go. I fired it before I put in in the shadow box, and you know there are thousands more in the same condition!
That's quite a treasure you have there. There were only 68,533 delivered to the armed forces prior to 1917 by Colt and Springfield Armory. I hope you've had it appraised and insured - I certainly would.

I've made a few custom fitted display boxes for folks around here, and I'd love to see a pic of your display if you're willing. Here's one of the boxes I made for a retiring Sheriff's S&W Model .32-20 M&P a few years ago. If you're not familiar with this revolver here's a good article about it.

Had the shadow box made in 1992, the 1911 has broken its retainers and I need to have it opened and re-hung. Not a good picture, lots of glare, but the only one I have. The old man is on the left, my grandfather was a field physician in the cavalry and deployed to France in 1917 is on the right, but the glare is blocking it. Dead center is a sterling silver match box my Grandmother gave my Grandfather before deployment, its engraved and my father also carried it in WWII

Very nice display, thanks. :) Btw, since you granddad was a physician, he would have been familiar with this book, and perhaps even known the author: Elements of Field Hygiene and Sanitation, by Colonel J. H. Ford. (U.S.A. Medical Corps). Originally published in 1917, copyrighted in 1918. I have a copy my daughter gave me for a birthday about 20 years ago. Has a great many illustrations and pictures in it of the medical facilities at the time, and how the Med Corp operated. On the first page of Chpt 1 is this:

"The prime duty of the Medical Department is not the care of the individual, harsh as they may seem, but he preservation of the health of the command in order that it's numbers and vigor may be unimpaired and it's military value thus maintained."

Copies are available on Amazon of course, if you're interested in it. Or you can download a scanned copy free here:
