Longer Barrels

Post by Ojaileveraction » Sun Nov 10, 2019 1:36 pm

I am a big fan of 22 to 26 inch barrels on lever guns.
HRA responded to Lever action silhouette shooters with their 24" Frontier 22lr. In a market wear there were virtually no new production rifles., Henry 22lrs are now well represented at matches.
Not so much for center fire rifles. In my opinion it's the lack of anything with a bar longer than 20 inches.
With only iron sights being allowed, sight radius is a major consideration in the sport.

Anything longer than 20", while nice for reaching out there, is much more cumbersome to drag through the woods for the average size hunter.
I am 6', and I can hold a 20" barrel at arms length and pointed at the ground, but there's not a lot of clearance left.

If I had a 24" barrel at arms length it would likely touch the muzzle to the ground.

Sometimes we forget that the .22 long rifle cartridge is made to burn all of the powder in a 16 inch barrel.

.
I also prefer longer barrels. To me the carbine barrel length 'looks' too short.

Oh, I like the carbines also, especially for woods walking.
One of the reasons I had one of the 35's cut down, and why I bought the 444 P. :o
But those long octagon barrels are just plain sexy. :D
