New on board, been lurking for a bit and read with interest this thread.

A Long Ranger followed me home a few weeks ago. It's probably the most aesthetically pleasing firearm I have - not that I'm a collector, more an accumulator.

I appreciate everyone's wisdom, however, as a lever action purest I'd rather not over power the rifle with an optic that appears too large. So, my question is, has anyone pondered a mid point between the 2 - 7 and 3 - 9 (or greater) optic? I'm thinking specifically of the Leupold 2.5 - 8 x 36.

Here's my solution, a Nikon "Buckmaster" 3X9X40. I plan on hunting with the scope set at 6 power and adjust as necessary if time allows.

Back on Pg 1 there's a close up of my LR 308 with a Leo 4-12X, which seems very proportional to the lines of the rifle. I was concerned about it overwhelming the "look" of it, but it didn't turn out to be so.
As to your question, a 2.5-8X36 would be great, too. Harder to come by in that configuration, but probably worth hunting for.
As noted above, though, caliber probably matters, too, so keep us posted and WELCOME to the forum!

Well, I intended to share the caliber and I suppose the thought was lost somewhere between beta waves... .308, my go to caliber. All rifles pictured on the thread are quite attractive, however, the 2.5 - 8 x 36 sits atop both my Marlin MX and MXLR. The size and functional qualities of this optic blend nicely.

I appreciate the welcomes, and I shall continue to read, learn and ask what I'm sure will be elementary questions about the Henry product line, including the addition of the Long Ranger.

Lots of good digging to be done in the "Scopes" sub-forum, with lots of pictures to evaluate, but maybe not so many LRangers. Keep us posted on your quest!

.
First, welcome from the TV, Oregon!

I think a scope with a small objective so as to mount it on a lever as low as possible has the best appearance, but that might come as a compromise to usability if too low for your eye and cheek weld. Your thinking on the Leupold 2.5-8x36 I think is a good one for appearance and use out to 100yds or so.
On mine is a Leupold 3.5-10x40, a bit more scope than I need, while the Vortex 1-6x24 I have on my .30-30 is not quite enough.

I put a simple 3-9x32 Simmons that I had sitting in the safe.
Works great!

I ordered the optic of choice, the 2.5 - 8 x 36 from Midway USA, though not the least expensive vendor one of the most reliable with honorable mention to Brownell's.

Haven't shot the Long Ranger yet, but I hear it's a soft shooting rifle. Would you agree?
