Weatherby Mark V

Post by JayZuv » Tue Feb 05, 2019 8:16 pm

Evening everyone, so at my lgs I came across a very nice mark v in .300 wby mag. I love the caliber, and it’s very nice looking. According to them it’s from early 1970 and made in Germany, does anyone here have experience with these rifles and know what a reasonable price on one is?

no personal experience with a Mark V but do know they have an excellent reputation .... do have extensive experience with loading and firing 300 WBY ammo .... it is one tremendous cartridge .... it can be loaded with 110 to 220 gr bullets .... our practice bullet of choice is a Nosler 180 gr Ballistic Tip and for hunting a 180 gr E-tip ... out of the box, loaded with 84.5 gr of IMR 7828 pushing a 180 gr Nosler, ours kicked like a big, angry mule ... contrasting our max 45-70 loads using 51.5 gr of IMR 4198 pushing a 300 gr Nosler and you can easily understand the contrast .... if I could only keep one rifle I'd be hard pressed no to keep our 300

Wow! That’s a pretty serious amount of powder. I’ve heard nothing but good things of weatherby from other sites so I would assume quality won’t be an issue. Also considering a new one is north of 2 grand, and this one is 799, I’m leaning more towards pulling the trigger on it. (Pun intended)

my own experience with older rifles would lead me to want to know if Weatherby still offers parts for a 1970'ish Mark V .... we have that issue with our 1970 Browning BLR .... they have made significant changes in and no longer offer several different critical parts

Those early German made Weatherby Mark Vs are much sought after by Weatherby fans, since those were the guns that started the ball rolling for Roy Weatherby. Have never seen one go for less than 1K if it's in reasonable condition, but the truly mint ones in rare editions and chamberings can go for much, much more. Doubt very much you'll get parts and service for these early guns, but best way to find out is to call Weatherby.

Thanks for the info, this would be my first weatherby, and from some digging online it seems that the mk v has quite the following. This one is in great condition other than a weird bit of rust near the end of the barrel. The wood is in excellent condition and it has a redfield 3-9 that comes with it. The bore is also spotless, so I’m thinking it’s probably a good buy. As far as service and parts I think I’ll contact weatherby tomorrow about that

I should also mention that this shop services and test fires all pre owned rifles before selling, so functionality shouldn’t be an issue

Little late to the party. I had a Mk5 Deluxe, made in USA so made @1996. The Deluxe is a $2500 rifle new, I got nearly 2K for it when I let it go. The German models are highly sought after if it is in decent condition. Be aware, the Weatherby rifles are quite heavy, not a carry all day piece. They shoot fantastic, fit and finish is second to none. Without seeing it I would say it could demand $1000-$1500 sight-unseen, possibly (good possibility) more. You can look at completed sales on Gunbroker for a better idea.

Thanks for the info! Since then I have brought it home, and I posted photos in the "new one to the collection" post. You are most definitely correct about how heavy they are! But it shoots wonderful and I am very pleased with it.
