You'll love the hunting round performance of the Federal Fusion 150 gr. Also might try a 165 in say a Sirocco or Sierra.

Re: Long Ranger .308!
The advice I got back from Patrick at Henry, based on talk around their place, was that bullet weights under 160 gr seemed to be performing best in the Long Ranger. I'll play around with some heavier weights eventually, but right now, the 150 Fusion is in the "not broke, don't fix it" category! I just need to also keep in mind that 1) for now (and probably forever), the rifle is a better shooter than I am; 2) I'm not as good as those internet gun reviewer guys; and 3) it's a hunting, not a sniper, rifle, so I need to understand and live with "close enough."Ozarkridgerunner wrote:You'll love the hunting round performance of the Federal Fusion 150 gr. That said, I think I can get it pretty darn close!

Yes sir, I can relate to that. Maybe the rate of twist ? Any how if that's what they are recommending that's what I would follow as far as the bullet weights. That 150 gr Fusion will do the job in style on deer.ESquared wrote:The advice I got back from Patrick at Henry, based on talk around their place, was that bullet weights under 160 gr seemed to be performing best in the Long Ranger. My inquiry as to the born on date of this 308 LR went to Patrick in NJ, who sent it to Dee in WI and the answer back was "4/17/15." Almost seems like a typo, as it seems like the online reviews of the "launch" of the Long Ranger line were all from 2016. Will have to double-check...

.
There should have been an 'Ammo Check' card that came in the box with the Henry. It will give you a date that is within a few days of the born date.

Yep, found that, and it was something like 10/6/16, which tells me that 4/17/15 couldn't have been the mfr date. Turns out it was 9/20/16.Mags wrote:.

Re: Long Ranger .308!
BEAUTIFUL RIFLE!!!! hell that deal didn't hurt you any at all. Henry Repeating Arms still at its best!!ESquared wrote:This may not come as a huge surprise, but I took delivery of my Long Ranger .308 a couple of days ago and got it sighted in at 50 yds yesterday. Did a deal at my local range/shop, as they had one hanging on the wall (early production) that had absolutely beautiful furniture. I had a Winchester semi-auto 12 ga. that I'd shot maybe 10 times and hadn't touched in nearly a dozen years, so I worked a trade that brought my cost of the Henry to about half of retail.
Not an offer I COULDN'T refuse, but it sure was an offer I didn't want to refuse.
Had enough lead time to get a sling and scope; got a Leupold VX Freedom 4-12X40 and a set of Warne med rings. Zeroed it in with Federal Fusion 150 gr., based on feedback I got from Patrick at HRA.
My initial range report, from yesterday's scope-zeroing session, is that it's got an action that's smoother than either of my other Henrys, but that bolt is LOOooong.
Recoil isn't bad at all, but my frame of reference is that 12 ga I referenced above, which I painfully remember shooting with 3-1/2" magnum loads. Have no idea what the .308 feels like compared to the Henry .44 mags or 45/70s out there, but I'd think it's easier to take.
The high rise on the stock makes it set up for a scope, so the point and shoot aspect of it natural.
Just need more time with it, some outdoor, longer yardage range shooting and different stances/positions.
Anyway, here are some pics!

Thank you, sir! It has since had a trip back to Rice Lake for a bit of rehab, but that's been covered in other threads. VERY happy now, and it's shooting lights out!
