What kind of distances have you been successful with? Interested in your experiences and any tips...

Have shot the .44 at around 50 yards and under on steel and paper targets so far. Getting prepped for deer season.I know it's early but hey, I love to shoot! Sighted in dead on at 50 yards as that has been my longest shot on a deer in the brush we got here. Using the Hornady 240XTP hollow point bullet with H110 powder. Have been successful with that bullet using a sabot in a muzzleloader-does a number on deer or about anything else!

Good to know, thanks for that. Been debating on how far out to zero in my .357 Mag BBS, and I think 50 yds will do it. If I get something at 60, 75, 85, whatever, I can compensate for that with this scope, wouldn't you think?

I figure that if a high lung hold hits under the deer I won't shoot again as it probably means it is a touch too far away.

take a look at this link === > http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi

feed the info it calls for into the proper blanks (come as close as you can) .... you can set it for any distance and it will quickly compute the bullets trajectory .... you can tweak so as to set a zero distance and then know where the bullet will be at any point you wish ... its easy to use and after running a few set of variables you can easily pick the best zero point so as to offer you the most effective bullet position at any point along the way

I've never seen a muzzle velocity printed for a Hornady 158 gr XTP out of a Henry BBS barrel. What would you guess: 1,800 fps?

I plugged that in as a guess and it looks like if it's zeroed at 100 yds, it'll hit 1" high (actually 0.9") at 50 yds. In other words, within the margin of error of my shot placement to begin with.

What this tells me, if I"m interpreting the data correctly, is that zeroing in at 50 yds will be plenty good enough for anything I would shoot at under 100 yds. And, if I'm more than 100 yds away, I need a bigger gun, most likely, unless the conditions are perfect.

Just trying to get my head around all this.

our 158 gr Noslers run about 1600 fps .... we zero ours about an inch high at 50 yards
