I was considering one of these but ran into one big problem. The gun holds five rounds. Calif. Hunting regulations, even for small game limits the capacity to 3 rounds. If a plug is used it must be removable only if the gun has to be diss-assembled in order to do so.(Same as waterfowl regulations). Any thoughts? Am I missing something other than escaping from California?

if you contact Henry you will find they can make custom magazine tubes to accommodate such laws .... don't know about the disassembly part but do know you can't take a rod apart without a good bit of effort

Pretty much all pump or semi auto shotguns come from the factory with a magazine plug for water fowl hunting. Mossberg just uses a wood dowl with on O ring, Remington's are plastic.
I'm sure Henry has a solution.

I contacted Henry Arms about the magazine capacity problem when using the gun to hunt in Calif. And was told that while they were aware of the problem in some areas they did not have a solution yet but we're working on it already. They answered my e- mail within 24 hrs. Great customer service. I guess that gives me time to start saving for it or maybe look at that single shot 20 guage instead. So many problems to solve. Oh we'll, I get to pick up my new Long Ranger AND my new frontier 22 Magnum at the gun shop tomorrow, guess they will keep me occupied for a while.

Simple solution is to offer the gun with a shorter magazine that can only hold 3 rounds. Or a tube permanently modified for 3, and marked on the end cap with the capacity.

It is not the caliber of the gun, but the caliber of the man holding it.

Old guns, old cars, and old men all lose something when they are set aside, only to be put on display.
Traveling East, searching for that which is lost.

I found the following quote from the link above to be very interesting :

"The close dimensional similarities of the venerable .45-70 Gov't. straight-walled rifle cartridge to the slightly smaller modern 2½" long .410 bore shotgun shell allowed Henry's designers to simply borrow most of the Rare Carbine's components directly from the company's .45-70 Gov't. rifle. This is good news for .410 fans. I've spent some quality time running the .45-70 Gov't. model and it can really take a pounding. Firing the much softer-shooting .410 bore from a .45-70 receiver means this lever gun is over built in the best sense and will provide a lifetime (if not longer) of enjoyable trigger time."

over built
indeed .. :D

They really ought to do something similar to a Mossberg Shockwave with these .410 lever guns. A 26.5 inch non nfa .410 would be pretty nifty don't ya think?
