American Handgunner and Guns Magazines RIP

Podcast says they are gone, print wise. Sad for me, I like print versions, subscribed thru 2028. Not about the money, I'll miss the Magazines. Too costly to produce, but they will still be around in digital form. Podcasts now and then...

The younger shooters read online for the most part...
I guess I know what they mean. I have a kindle, but I still read actual books, I like to turn the pages. I'll often buy well used books, look for underlines, highlighted sections, notes in the margins. Did the previous owner think like me?

I use to subscribe to them and to Shooting Times. I really miss the articles of Skeeter Skelton, Mike Venturino, Bob Milek, and Elmer Keith. Im sure I missed some others that I cant think of right now but I share your sadness Marine. I miss the old days.

I have been subscribed to handgunner since it started. It was one of my anchor points as my career took me around the country, or around the world. My Great Grandmother knew of my love of reading, and her annual Christmas gift to me, was as subscription to Reader's Digest. Every year, without fail, until her passing. Fit perfectly in the Cargo pocket of my camouflage utilities. Believe me, Marines knew the meaning of "Hurry up, and wait. "

Since the 70s. I started buying it when I first joined the Corps, and remember subscribing early on. I had hoped to start shooting combat pistol which was new then, and wanted to learn as much as I could. I also got Combat Handguns in the mail as well.

I had ALL those magazines until we moved from VA to OK. Couldn't bring them, no room in the Uhaul. Gave them to a fellow shooter. In six years here, filled up another cabinet. Went thru and gave away everything but Handgunner and Guns after I read them.

Speaking of gun mag writers from the past do you all remember a writer named Pat McManus? He was a humor writer and had the last page in Field and Stream and Outdoor Life for many years. Pat was born just up the road in Sandpoint Idaho and was a professor at Eastern State University just down the road in Cheney Wa.

He also wrote several outdoor humor books that are a fun read. I have a few of them plus a book by writer Jim Charmichel, another humor outdoor book. All are a collection of short stories and are easy reads. I’m happy to send them to anybody who would like to read them and if there are others interested perhaps they could be forwarded on. Let me know via PM with your address.
