Crab spiders are mostly ambush hunters. They sit still in a likely place and wait for the prey to come to them unawares. The fly probably only realized his mistake when the spider grabbed him. I see a lot of flies that are attracted to my flowers. I assume they are after the nectar. Crab spiders do produce silk for drop lines and a few other tasks, but do not build webs.

Some species can also change color to match their backgrounds, although it takes a few days.
