Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
Jim, thank you for your detailed thread about your experiences with the Davy Crockett. My buddy brought his out when we shot this past Saturday. He raved about it and after seeing him use it on the tailgate of his truck and eating a delicious hamburger and hotdog, I was very impressed. He has had no trouble with it and it appeared well used. He had it on the tailgate of his truck. After I expressed more interest, he showed me how it worked and all the possible power methods. He never said anything about software updates or using his phone to control it. I went as far a looking into it on Amazon. However, after reading the trouble you had with the first one, I don't think I'll get one yet. It is great to hear that their customer service is as good as you say it is. That's the ONLY reason I will be looking at this brand further. I will continue to look at your posts regarding this unit.
Coach, yours seems to be a great unit. Have you had any trouble with it?

Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
I have two units. The Jim Bowie and the Daniel Boone.
The only problem I have run into is when I've done several meals on it and the fire pot gets too full of ash.
When this happens and you go to start it, the pellets are above the heat element and they don't catch fire.
Solution is to vacuum out the fire pot more often. With a clean vacuumed fire pot it has worked flawlessly .
We have only used the Daniel unit a couple times at the lake house and it has been perfect.
We are going to the lake house this weekend and I'm sure we will be smoking something...
The Hardware store I work at part time in retirement is a distributor of Green Mountain Grills. I got great employee cash pricing on both Smokers.
You could say I got a couple of SMOKING deals.

Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
what brand(s) of pellets do you use .. .. with our first pellet grill we tried several brands of pellets and found that there can be a considerable difference in the amount of ash residue .... we settled on Pit Boss Competition Blend pellets that for us have burned remarkably clean .... since switching to them, we've been able to cook longer between vacuuming .... we've also found their blend to work well with all of the different foods we grill/smoke

We have been using these and the GMG pellets.
We sell them at the Hardware store and I get my employe discount.

there are several good brands out there ..... folks should use whatever they find they like best .... I'm not familiar with the pellets shown .... the GMG ones carry a good reputation .... as mentioned we use Pit Boss Competition Blend ===> https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pit-Boss-100 ... hbdg=L1100 .... we buy them at Walmart for about $15 for a 40 lb bag

Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
the upgraded cooking grates we ordered from Pimp-My-Grill (PMG) really can in handy in grilling chicken for our camping club .... the OEM grates are fine but the ones from PMG double the capacity .... as previously noted, we've found them to be really good to work with
