100 year old Remington 51 in 380acp

Post by deano5150 » Mon Jun 29, 2020 8:09 pm

I had the privilege of borrowing my wife’s uncle’s Remington 51 380acp pistol this past weekend. I’d never even held one before then. He’s in the hospital with some medical issues and asked me to clean it. So I watched a good YouTube video on how to field strip the pistol and then I cleaned and oiled it. It really wasn’t very dirty at all other than inside the barrel. This pistol is in immaculate condition considering it’s age. No rust or pitting and overall very clean. I looked up the serial number on the Internet and found out it was manufactured in 1920. Searching YouTube and GunBroker and the Internet I have not seen another example that is nickel plated like this one. Here are some pictures of it.

It’s a beautiful and elegant little pistol and shoots very well. I only put 21 rounds through it (it has a seven round magazine). I would have loved to have shot more but I really did not want to damage this pistol. There were no malfunctions and it seems to be very accurate. More accurate than me that is. :D All the weight is in the grip so recoil was very mild. The grip feels very good in the hand and it points naturally. The only thing I don’t like about this little pistol is the very tiny sights.

Here’s a link to a short video of me shooting it.

Nice looking pistol. Can't say I've ever seen one, has an old Browning High power shape to it. Thanks.
