May 17th Range Report

Post by RanchRoper » Sun May 17, 2020 1:53 pm

Overcast day, 60f, had the whole range to myself as usual. Did some 15 yd work with the pistol, 50 & 100 yd shooting with the rifle. No wind, so it was real nice and a true representation of what these guns can do. Shooting factory re-manufactured ammo today instead of my own loads, 250 gr LFN. Made by Wolf in Kingston Ontario. I have quite a lot of this ammo and it is very nice to shoot.

First up, 50 yds with the 1860 Henry 45 Colt. Open sights, shooting from 1 knee. 24 rounds. 12" target.

Next moved over to the 100 yd range, 12 rounds from 1 knee as well. Ladder sight up on first notch. Got all 12 on the paper, pretty happy with that. I use binoculars to check each hit and adjust accordingly. Lots of drop on those bullets at that range, tough to compensate.

Lat 14 rounds I used up from 15 yds with the revolver, 1 hand, the old Colt was dialed in today... :)

Thanks again, RR. I just love to see your targets and read your reports. You're definitely the King of the Cowboys.

Is envy still one of the seven deadly sins? It is? Damn!

I Don’t think those guns have anything to do with being dialed in. I think that cowboy from Alberta is the one thats dialed in. Cant wait to get out and shoot my conversion. May is Birthday month at our house. Every other day is some ones birthday

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

RR, every time I read a post with someone whining and moaning about how awful those "primitive" open sights are to use and how it's just impossible to get accuracy with them, I think of you and just chuckle. I seriously doubt I could do any better than that with one of those fancy telescopic sights. That, sir, is outstanding marksmanship.

RR. Nice shooting with with the "one knee"...suggest you do the same test off hand. If you ever have the opportunity to shoot competitively in Pistol Caliber Silhouette, off hand is a requirement. It actually shouldn't be a problem for you. You can find the silhouette targets (1/2 size) for 40m/50m/75m/100m on the NRA website. Aiming points change with every target. BobGinVA

Thanks, I do shoot off hand sometimes, 25 or 50 yds. Some good, some not...the barrel is a tough manage in the wind. I intend to shoot my high wall when it shows up both off hand and from 1 knee. The 30" octagon barrel will be interesting.
