New skinner on the 45 colt

Post by Greyhawk » Wed Mar 25, 2020 7:32 pm

Ok... I put a skinner sight on my Marlin 45-70, but after a while decided I wanted the Skinner sight that I can combine with a scope on that rifle... What to do with the original skinner sight that I bought? Well it looked like it would fit on my Big Boy .45 Colt if it just had another hole in the right spot. So I drilled another hole in the sight and mounted it on my Big Boy. The question was then, will the skinner work ok with the factory front sight? Well here are the results: The first 5 shot group was with a standard 'normal' load of 16 grains of 2400 and 250 grain XTP's at 25 yards... Things opened up with that load at 50 yards as seen on the 50 yard yellow sheet. But then I tried 5 shots with my hunting load of 19 grains of 2400 at 50 yards and things tightened up nicely again, as seen on the blue target. The snow at the range is nasty now with ice on top, so I didn't put a 100 yard target out. But, it looks like that front sight is going to work just fine.

Way to make things work! Glad that made a good rifle better.

Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

Love that you did a mod on that Skinner and put it to good use. Nice work. We're over to the east of you in the far north of Wisconsin and still have heavy snow cover, though it's as much ice as snow. Been having rain, lately, so the snow is saturated. It's been a long winter.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Great job on adding the needed hole! Did you have to lower the rear sight all the way down to work with the front sight?
Nice shooting and looks like a good load!

well done .... tip of my cap for having the ability to drill a hole in your rifle ... no way I could bring myself to do so

Yes, I just left the rear sight in place and lowered it all the way. And to the questions on the new hole.... I drilled it in the sight, not the rifle! :D
To be honest I'm kind of a hack, I wouldn't trust myself to do too much gunsmithing!! And if I ever did any rifle alterations I wouldn't post a picture of it.. Duct tape ain't that pretty.
