well tried everything paper patched ,bullet set forward ,black powder, 39.4 grains of imr 4198 shot best. so i went ahead and reamed it to 45-90. 85 to 90 grains of black powder, 29.0 to 39.0 of 5744 500 grain fnlead ,the imr 4198 hits harder than eaither black or5744. 40 rounds of 45-90 in the h015 and 50 rounds of imr4198 in my marlin 1895gbl all to day shoulder feels fine. in the stock there is a hole it,s near 4 inch deep .866 wide 2.8 long i put a small bag that i made in there and filled it with # 9 shot . with scope it came out to 10.2 pounds.a real joy to shoot.will post photos tomarrow. thank you all for your coments.

Have you tried a PAST recoil shield that straps to your shoulder?

sighting in our CCH 45-70 to fire full power hunting loads wasn't fun .... I've been wondering about the recoil from firing a 45-70 single shot from a bench .... it appears you have a handle on doing so

frist iam a big guy so it takes alot to hurt me . get a limb saver air recoil pad (sold at walmart ) about 29.00 bucks.makes a big difference i use a bag for a rest on the front only. then i reload my own ammo imr from35.5 to39.5 imr 4198 those top loads can be hard on you.i have been trying 5744 29.5 to 39.5 not as hard on ta. what got me to move to 45-90 i want to shoot 500gr lead bullets could not get the powder in there to be effective in my 45-70 gbl.the full black powder compressed by 300 thou is not as hard as full on 45-70 smokless load. the weight of the gun makes alot of difference try to find a way to make it heaver. and try the limsaver and try to push the bullet more than 1450 fps it will take everything.

at the time I was working to sight ours, I had been on blood thinning meds for a long time .... long ago, I found a trio of mods that work well in reducing felt recoil from big boomers .... first was to replace the factor recoil pad with a top rated one .... second, install a mercury recoil suppressor in the stock ... third, to have it Magn-na-ported ...

68 grains of 2f swiss a .030 vegie fiber wad a 540 grain Paul Jones Creedmore bullet. 45-70. I shot that many times at 500 yards. 45-90 does a better job at the yardages above that than the 70 but there is alot of guys still using the 70. I eventually got a 45-100 and loved it but that load worked for me for quite sometime. Im sure you are doing it if you are shooting BPCR but you need a drop tube to load black in rifle cases.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
