Black Powder Range fun

Post by BigAl52 » Fri Nov 08, 2019 9:54 pm

Had just a great time at the range today with my John Bergmann 54 caliber Hawken. Bought it a year ago from John who is a builder located down there in Tenn. First time out and sighted it in on this target at 25 yards off the bags.

First shot at 8 oclock and the fourth shot highest at 12 oclock. Im certain that one I let go before ready. Set trigger is really light.

That's a great kind of slow action relaxing fun! Great shooting first time out too!! Guess you keep a can of Ballistol handy in between
shooting sessions?
Closest I get to BP is shooting Alliant Black MZ.

That truly is a beautiful rifle, Al. Ten pounds, though, is a bit out of my league. I've dabbled in BP shooting every now and then over the years and lately have been thinking of giving it another go. The slower pace, the challenge, the tradition and the beauty of it still appeals to me.

Thanks for all the nice comments on the rifle and the shooting. Black Powder is truly always a good time for me. The range has steel swingers on it also and I love shooting those more than punchin paper.

NCG Ive got a Hawken Squirrel rifle in 40 cal that would be right up your alley for BP shooting. Its without a doubt my favorite of all the others I own. Its not near that heavy and is just a blast to plink with. Traditions also makes a Crockett in 32 caliber that would be great for plinking.

That's a great lookin rifle. It is just a bit on the modern side for me though. I haven't fired a percussion rifle in many years. I am more or a Penn. longrife in flint kind of guy.

I have flinters to Jim and I like the Long Rifles but my favorites are still and will always be the Hawkens. There is alot of guys who just go flintlock nuts and I can understand that as Im Hawken nuts. But as far as flint and percussion go I can go either way.
