The XTP design has been a popular handgun bullet for a long time and one of Hornady's biggest sellers in every caliber from .25 auto to .500 S&W Magnum. There's a reason for that.Ridgerunner665 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 8:16 pm
I'm confident a high velocity 210 XTP behind the shoulder, through the heart/lung area, would drop any whitetail in the country like a bolt of lightning.

back when I loaded for a 41 Mag, I used Nosler 41 Caliber 210 Grain Sporting Handgun JHP Bullets .... did take 1 deer, no bear or boar .... Shooter's Pro Shop has 41 BLEMS in stock at a really good price (link below)

Guys, don't get me wrong. I'm not a reloading expert- I was just stating on what I read in the manual (8th. edition) and my discussion with one of the Hornady techs, via the phone. He was puzzled with my velocity question, because the velocity posted on a box of 41 mag. custom ammo was above the max velocity stated in the manual. If you guys are putting more horse power behind the 210g. XTP's with good results, I'm joining the club !

Dang it y'all!
I done went and ordered 2 boxes of 210 grain A Frames.
I'm still absolutely certain the XTP will make an excellent deer bullet but my curiosity got the best of me when I realized I have never fired a Swift bullet of any kind.... can't have that, gotta try them.
I do like the tried and true high shoulder shot after all.
I won't be shooting many of them, too rich for my blood... but I can see the usefulness in hunting with them.
I guess thats my payback for getting Vaquero to spend his money on Underwood ammo, lol.

I don't reload at all, but one of the things I've been told is that the twist rate of your barrel is important when loading hot. My BBSC is 1:18, which is pretty slow. If it was say 1:11, my results with factory ammo might be considerably different - and not in a good way. One of the experienced reloaders here probably knows more about it than me.Slugnut wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 11:32 amGuys, don't get me wrong. Re: Why the 41 Magnum?
1 in 18 isn't slow twist for a handgun round... for a long time 44 mags were 1 in 38, some still are but a few are now 1 in 18-20.
Thats one true advantage the 41 has over the 44..... all 41 mags have the proper twist to shoot any bullet available for them.
44"s with 1 in 38 barrels don't do so well with bullets over 270 grains or so... they may (or may not) do OK at 100 yards, but the bullets start destabilizing after that.

Thanks. I knew you or someone would pick up on this. Even at my advanced age, I still learn something new almost daily.Ridgerunner665 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 12:45 pm1 in 18 isn't slow twist for a handgun round... for a long time 44 mags were 1 in 38, some still are but a few are now 1 in 18-20.

Re: Why the 41 Magnum?
Speaking of the 44 mag. My Marlin 1894 (44 mag.) shoots the 200g. XTP's (my reloads) under 1 1/8" at 54 yds. (5 shots) off bench/bags at 1600 fps., with a 1-38 ROT. My T/C Encore 44 mag. barrel and Ruger All Weather (44 mag.) both have 1-20 ROT. They both like the reloaded 225g. FTX bullets at 1700 fps. Strangely enough, my Son's Ruger 44 auto carbine has a 1-38 ROT, while His Ruger 96/44 (lever) has a 1-20 ROT (as per Ruger), go figure !
