Post by Rifletom » Tue Aug 13, 2019 10:53 pm

Heading to the range tomorrow[Wed.] early, as its gonna be HOT. Friend will be sighting in some new loads for his 30-06, I'll be shooting my .45 Colt and .357. Haven't shot in about a month, and that is WAY too long. Report later in the day.

Anything over 7 days is way to long. Gonna fix that real soon if I have anything to say about it. Have fun tomorrow Tom.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Ok, range report. As this was primarily to get Dennis' 30-06 ready for Ca. deer season, we concentrated on that. He got that dialed in pretty quick. Him to hunt, me to help and just hang out. It's a real nice area, Bridgeport/Bodie area. He's set.
As for me. I shot the .357 and .45 Colt @ 50 yards. The load I made for the .357 wasn't what I had hoped for: 158gr Missouri RNFP coated with 11.5gr 2400. I'm thinking 12.5 gr 2400 will be a better load. I'll see. The .45 shoots so dang well, I just love that rifle. But, with those factory irons and my eyesight, things start getting blurry and covered up. Still. it shoots so well. I'm going to have to get a better sighting system on it. Not sure of my direction there, will have to consider a few different angles here. I do not want to scope it if I can improve on open sights somehow. Ok, done for now.

I agree with BigAl. I have the receiver mounted Skinner Express Peep on my .357 BBB and the barrel mounted Skinner Peep on my H001. Neither required me to change the front sight. They are both on point out to 100 yards. I'm a fan. Let us know what you decide.

I think you're both correct. Skinner Express and for the front, I don't know. That brass bead covers everything at 50 yards and beyond. Dremel the bead off, Lyman Globe sight. Hmm.
Back to the .357. Al, what is your load with 158's and 2400? I know 2400 works wonderful with XTP's.

Alliant 2400 works better on the upper loadings-better magnum powder and not really suited for the target type stuff.

Tom give it a try around 14grs. It might take another half but start at about 14 and see what it does.
