Herters Ammo
Has anyone had excessive copper fouling While using Herters Ammo. I ran some through my new BBS in 357 mag along with American eagle rounds and I noticed the fouling after the Herters. It is a bear to get out. Started with Butches Bore Shine then moved to Hoppes elite copper fouling remover which worked a lot better. I finally got to where the end of the muzzle isn’t showing streaks but the patches are still coming out blue.
I hope it was the ammo and not a rough barrel from the factory.

Re: Herters Ammo
have you found your rifle provide the level of accuracy that you require .. .. if so and if it should have a degree of roughness in the barrel, that can be dealt with .... over the years I've owned several firearms that required a bit of a break-in to smooth out a barrel .... I've found that Sweets 7.62 Solvent does a good job of removing copper ===> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O ... UTF8&psc=1 .... as to Herters Ammo, I'd suggest trying a few other brands to see if the cause is the barrel or the ammo

Re: Herters Ammo
I will be shooting reloads from now on. I just shot some factory rounds I had put back a long time ago. The American Eagle grouped very good. The Herters did not.
I am loading 158 XTPS and I’m going to pick up some XTP FP this weekend. I am hoping the copper fouling will stop after a few more shooting sessions

Re: Herters Ammo
given you've found a commercial round that groups well, you should be able to find a load that will work for you .... 158 XTPS are very good bullets to work with .... just as an FYI, we've found that 158's from Rose Distribution ===> http://www.rozedist.com/mm5/merchant.mv ... de=ZBJ-38S <=== make really good, cheap practice ammo

Re: Herters Ammo
Other than XTPS what would be a good hunting round for deer? I don’t have any experience with handgun caliber hunting bullets yet and I have been reading that any quality jacketed soft point would do.

.
TetraGun Copper Solvent is another product that works well for getting the copper out.

Re: Herters Ammo
for practice we use the Rose Distribution bullets shown in the link above .... for hunting we've used Nosler's 158 gr JHP bullets since the mid 60's ....

Re: Herters Ammo
The Herters name has been purchased by some ammo company. The Real Herters was a mail order outfit that dealt in quality hunting and fishing products. . I am still using the reloading press that I bought from them in 1969. It has roller bearings in the linkage. Also I still use the powder scale that I bought at the same time. I have a pair of Herters snake boots that I have worn when hunting in Florida and Ga. It is a real shame that Herters is no longer around.

Re: Herters Ammo
Those Rose bullets seem like the best price around. I am going to see how the XTP's shoot and hopefully the copper fouling issues will stop. If i get time before fall i want to work up some loads for the Noslers also.
