GB squirrels

Post by Brad Cayton » Sun Jan 06, 2019 4:45 pm

I was able to go out for a short squirrel hunt this afternoon and took my Goldenboy. I'm the only one that eats em in my house so two was enough. I like this time of year, our deer season's over and you pretty well have the woods to yourself. Plus the leaves are off and makes for a good hunt with an open sighted 22.

Oh man - I am envious! I have the big Silver Grays all over where I live and NOT within a legal hunting area!

.
Had a conversation a few years ago with the OSU Extension Service. Killing the Oregon native Silver Gray (aka: Western Gray) squirrels is frowned upon. In Oregon they have a "Sensitive" listing and in Washington State they have a "Threatened" listing. They breed once a year.

We also have the non-native Eastern Gray squirrel brought here in 1919. Looks very similar to the Western. The Eastern is a little smaller, same coloring but with tinges of brown and/or red in their fur. They are prolific and aggressive at getting into things. Easterns get shot on sight.

Eastern grey ( tree rats ) very destructive. Have even chewed up our resin wicker furniture on the side porch.. :x I see them...they die! They really seem to serve no purpose other than a meal or planting Oak trees where you don't want them.

Yes they are. I'd like to give whomever it was a piece of my mind for bringing them to western Oregon in the 1930's. I'd deport them back to the east coast if it was simple to do and free. Until then ...they die!
