H001TMLD .22WMR accuracy

Post by Sir Henry » Sat Nov 17, 2018 12:35 pm

I’m wondering what is the best groups I could expect from this rifle. It has a Lyman Globe sight up front and a Marbles Tang sight on the rear giving it a sight radius of 29.5 inches.

Please give me your expectations and I will take it to the range before Thanksgiving. I will be shooting bench at 50 yards and will shoot 10 round at NRA TQ-3/2(P) small bore rifle targets. These are normally scored in points because they are also about the rifle being zeroed. A perfect score would be 100(10x).

This five round target would be a 45(0x). The 9 ring is 1 7/8” across.

It's been my experience that the 22 mag is the wild child of the rimfire world. For me, it's the one that I can least predict as far as how it will shoot when buying a new rifle. Also been my experience that the 22 mag is very fussy about which ammo it likes and which it does not. This is why I treasure a truly accurate 22 mag rifle when I get one and, yes, there is such a thing.

In this test, though, I think the limiting factor will be the sight setup/shooting conditions/shooter, more than the rifle. Gene, on a good day, I KNOW that YOU can do under an inch at 50 yards with a peep and possibly down closer to half inch. At 100 yards, 2" should be possible. I say this because I've seen how you can shoot. Best of luck.

These are my ammo choices:

The Federal is similar to the CCI 22 WMR HP+V. The Winchester has a polymer tip.

I’ve only owned one truly accurate WMR and that was an old Marlin bolt. I sold it years ago and I’m still kicking myself.

I wish Norma made 22WMR ammo.

My money is on the Winchester Varmint load. Our Low Wall 22 mag loves the stuff.

In a way I wish I had my only other Henry rimfire today alongside my SGC .22LR. My Henry .22 Magnum Lever Action Rifle (H001M) was another smooth-action Henry, plus it was pretty darn accurate. Of course, my eyes were 5 years younger then, and I was able to use/handle a barrel-mounted Skinner peep quite well. I had written a couple of Range Reports using this rifle, but they went into the sunset with the old Henry forum.

I had tried several ammo brands, including the Maxi-Mag JHP you are going to use. Those were pretty good. But the best ammo I shot, and also used to sight in the H001M, was Speer 40gr Gold Dot. It is marketed as a round for short barrels. But I found one review on Midway USA where the fellow said he had "great accuracy using it with a savage model 93 bolt rifle. Took gophers at 190 yards." I regularly had fun clanging black steel targets at 50-60 yards with that Speer .22 magnum ammo. Guess I've just been fortunate that my only two Henry rimfires I've owned have been good rifles.

That is what has been the most accurate with my CZ. From what I remember it was remarkably better
