SGC 22LR Dialed In...

Post by ESquared » Mon Jul 23, 2018 2:35 pm

Finally squared away all the mods and tweaks and headed out for a quick 125 rounds. The pic of the target lists the details, mostly, but this was with the Lyman Globe/"Skinny Post" insert, from 25 yards, seated (chair) w/ bench in front, but no bags, no monopod, just hand-held on top of the bench. Did 100 rounds of warm-up while I tested moving the rear sight up and down 1 turn (ended up leaving it down all the way), making sure the windage was okay (did NOT adjust the rear right or left).
All shots were fairly rapid fire; not much "sniper practice," in other words.
Then I dropped the "Shoot-N-C" target on top and did another 25 rounds, same tempo. I'm okay with where I ended up, given the looseness of my outing.
Also posted some pics of the new baby. Hopefully the nice knot in the buttstock shows up. Also did a shot of how the Lyman is set up with the Shaver insert. This comes pretty darn close to being identical to my BBS .357 set-up, which was my goal.
From here on out, it's about repetition, muscle memory, "eyeball" memory and just getting used to firing a rifle after 40+ years.
Getting there...

Good shootin’. I have a few Shaver inserts and really like them.

Thanks; the Shaver inserts are just so much more finely tuned, it seems to me.

I didn't note it anywhere, but that Shoot-N-C black sticker target is 2-3/4" in dia., and the standard gold bead or many/most of the inserts that come with the Lyman would just cover that "dot"up at 25 yards. That skinny post gives you a bit more of a chance to hone it in a bit.

Looks good, ESquared. You may want to try some CCI Standard next time out - our SGC does a little better with CCI Standard than it does with any of the other stuff from CCI...

No kidding...I bought some CCI "Green Tag" a while back, expecting to see a difference. I did, but it wasn't for the better.
My Golden Boy, 10/22, and AMT 25/22 all shoot well on the standard round nose (1070fps) and the subsonic hollow points (1050fps), with no POI difference between the two at 25 yards.

tractortad: have you tried the CCI Suppressor (970fps and 45 grains)? My golden Boy likes them as well, though they more often see duty in the 10/22, as they are the lowest velocity round that will cycle it reliably.

I haven't tried Suppressor - didn't even know they made a 45gr subsonic round....

Those 45 grain bullets start to tumble unless you have a higher rate twist. At least that has been my experience.

Thanks for the tip, TT. Will give the SV a try. I don't know that I'm enough of a marksman to notice the difference, but will give it a shot (so to speak!). I'll take everything I can get!
