Need a bit on advice on a new Rimfire

Post by RudyN » Sat Mar 10, 2018 11:37 pm

I am getting ready to buy my third Henry. This one will be a rim fire and I am waffeling between a .22 Magnum and a .17 HMR anyone have both so that can give me a little advice? Right now I am leaning towards a .22 Magnum, am I doing ok? Oh, by the way it will be a Golden Boy model.

I have an Octagon Rim fire in all three calibers.
I'm having the most fun with the17 HMR.
It's like a little centerfire rifle compared to the 22 rimfires.
I put a little 4x scope on it and it kicks... shoots really good out past 100yrds.
I have not shoot much paper past zeroing the scope but it is pretty rough on stray clay pigeons.
Less expensive to shoot than the 22mag.

Im not sure where you are getting yours but from what I have seen online the ammo is about the same price as 22 mag. I have seen 22 mag ammo for 8.50 for 50. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I have made a decision. I will go to my LGS and see what they have in stock. If they have both I will buy them both, if not I will buy the one they have and order the other. We will see how that goes.

One thing I remember from the big ammo crunch of several years back, was that 17 HMR was one of the few rimfire cartridges that I could aways find and at a reasonable price, to boot. @22 mag was almost nowhere to be seen and when you could find a box it was insanely expensive. Not sure how it shoots in a Henry, but in all our other guns, the 17 HMRis the hands down winner for accuracy, even beating out the 22 LR.

The accuracy of 17HMR is quite good from what I understand and I sort of hope that it is the one the Gun shop has in stock, but at least I will be able to order one (I hope). :D

Great comment North Country Gal. The .17 ammo was easily found during the last ammo crunch that lasted for years on end. With all the gun control protests going on I wouldn't be surprised if we are on the eve for the next ammo crunch. Thank God for the NRA!
