Grain choice Iowa Whitetail

Post by Sizz » Sat Jul 18, 2020 10:33 am

Trying to decide between 300gr or 325gr for hunting roughly 100 yards give or take 25 Iowa whitetail this year for my 45-70.

I’ve been shooting both, but feel the 300 gr is working better in my gun, both have been deer loads, any suggestion is helpful.

Sorry, but feelings have nothing to do with ballistics. So without some hard data - at the very least a couple comparative targets to look at - I can't offer any suggestions.

Local shops don’t have that here, any recommendations for online purchase?

Ok. Saw also that you were having trouble finding ammo: Underwood has a variety of 45-70 in stock. It is expensive however.

my usual source is out of stock .... here is a link http://www.shootersproshop.com/nosler- ... -50ct.html where you can get a bit of info and get put on the list to be notified when they are back in stock ....

Wholesale Hunter has Nosler 45-70 Government 300 Grains Ballistic Silvertip Box of 50 for $38.92 that equals 78.4¢ per bullet

I was thinking that corn would be your best Gain. LOL JE; your math is a bit off. That should be $39.20.

At 100 yards, it isn't going to matter much what bullet you're using. Whatever your rifle shoots accurately will get the job done on a deer at that distance. Having said that, I'm currently using the 300gr Nosler BT's, but I'm working on a load with the 300gr Hornady. Always good to have options. And if you don't reload, 45-70 gets expensive with factory ammo.

I load Hornady 300 gr. JHP , over 41 hrs of IMR 4198. Works really well in my 45/70. Factory loads were awful.

I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.
