Best type of .38spl for All Weather 357?

Post by comiskeybum » Fri Mar 20, 2020 8:43 am

Hey guys,

I found some bulk .38spl online and I'm wondering if 158-grain XTP has any known feeding issues in a lever action? There are also standard 158-grain Hollow points available.

The purpose of the ammo would be for simply bulk/storage/xxxx hits the fan.

Thanks.

Have you tried 38 special in your gun to make sure it will run them without any issues.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Not yet. But the henry 357s are well documented to feed them fine. With ammo so hard to find right now I just didn't know if there were any known issues or know successes.

It's been a while since I used .38s in my BBB, but the few times that I did, it performed flawlessly. I even mixed them with .357s in the magazine and had no problems feeding or firing. Keep us posted on your results.

I would think that an XTP is "longer" than a RN anyway, or at least the same. I guess ill grab some and if they don't seem to work I can always use them in my Smith revolver.

XTP of the same weight is shorter that a RN Barry's Plated.

I have not found specific 357mag Rifle data for Round Nose cast bullets, round nose flat point yes.

A little off topic but here is some experience I had with XTP’s.

I loaded up a bunch of 9mm XTP’s for shooting in pistols and they function great. Then I bought an AR in 9mm and it absolutely hates XTP’s. They won’t feed, jam, and in some cases the bullets can get pushed back into the case. But, my AR doesn’t even have a proper feed ramp so I’m not surprised. Not sure if you will experience this with your lever or not.

I ended up jumping on some 5.56 that came available to me and will be here Monday. I will probably just wait for some bulk 357 to come available and jump on that.

Meanwhile, I already have some Buffalo Bore 357 coming for the Henry. That'll work nicely for now.

I've shot a few boxes I'd Hornady 357mag xtp bullets.
Great accuracy but for me just a little expensive for a lot of range shooting.
Xtp great hunting bullets.

The only concern for me is the fouling issues with shooting 38’s. You are better off shooting downloaded 357 cases. It takes more work, but well worth the effort.
