Having trouble finding .44 ammo

Post by Kendalew » Sat Feb 29, 2020 4:58 pm

I live in a smaller town (100,000 ppl). Having trouble finding ammo for my .44 Henry. Academy has one SKU and they were out. Tons of .45 and .357 though. Since It looks like I’ll be buying online, Thoughts on .44 Magnum and .44 Special ammo brands and loads that you’ve had great, consistent results with. Also, thoughts on why .44 ammo seems to be under stocked. Thanks for your time and input.

Underwood. It ain't cheap but it's the best you'll find. And it's rare that they are ever out of stock - even in hard to find ammo like .41 mag (my favorite big bore ammo).

As an example here's some chrony comparison I did between Hornady 190gr LeveRevolution and Underwood 210gr XTP last year from my BBSC. I'm sure you can tell which performs better. The ballistic coefficients are per Hornady for both the LeveRevolution and the XTP. And the zero in target at 100 yds (sorry no pics of that) showed in the group sizes. The Underwood was half the spread of the Hornady.

I reload so I don't have these kinds of problems, but
this past Fall I did try some of the UnderWood ammo that Gunny recommended in my 41 BBS.
Good stuff, not cheap but very accurate.

Underwood ammo is excellent. Depending on what you're looking for in a cartridge there are other good options also. For plinking the cowboy loads from HSM are great and reasonably priced. Really any of the HSM lineup has ran great out of my Henry's. If you shoot quite a bit, or plan to, reloading could be your best option. While you may be paying more up front for the equipment and supplies, the ability to tune cartridges to both your gun and your exact purposes is well worth it

I found 2 boxes of Magtech cowboy action 240gr rounds.
I just read that Magtech rounds leave a lot of residue. Thoughts on Magtech? Thanks.

I'm one of those guys who doesn't base my ammo decisions on cost. I have one short term shooting objective - reduce system variability as much as possible. The system being me, my equipment, and the ammo. The long term objective is to maintain a satisfactory (to me) level of minimum variability in the total system once achieved. For ammo that means finding and staying with what works the best. I don't shoot just to make noise. I shoot less than most people, but all practice I engage in has the non-negotiable objective of improving & maintaining optimum performance. Paying a little more for ammo is a small price to pay to eliminate one source of variability.
