Buying ammo in Ca.

Post by Rifletom » Thu May 09, 2019 9:25 am

It seems there is plenty of ammo to be purchased out there, but, in Ca., starting 7/1/2019, you'll have to go thru a "background" check to buy any type of ammo. Nobody here, including vendors are sure how this works yet. Go figure!
So, to get a head of the curve, two years ago, I started buying shotgun ammo, both 12 and 20ga, lead and steel and .22lr ammo. Been buying loading components forever, so way good there. As I no longer hunt "big game" any longer, I don not really need all copper or non-lead bullets, tho I have some, just because. Speaking of which, 7/1/2019 also starts the non-lead hunting ban STATEWIDE in Ca! :x Big game, small game, upland anything, you get the picture. So, for those on this forum who live in Ca., hope you're prepared. You can still buy ammo, just have to go thru hoops to do so. Ok, done.

Yes, there are changes in our Country: for good, bad or ugly. But, CA was where I purchased my first firearm (S&W 65-5). I remember going to the outer limits of the city (San Diego) for target practice. I guess that is a thing of the last.

Connecticut also requires a permit to purchase ammunition. Here, a background check is completed before that permit is issued. In order to purchase ammo online, all vendors require CT residents to provide a copy of the permit and a drivers' license. In local stores, the permit is presented at the checkout register.

CT, that is probably what they'll wind up doing here. Just don't know yet at this point. For people who are aware of these new laws, we're mostly GTG. But, for people who aren't, man, they are in for a surprise. Now, to go load up some more .45 Colt.

RR, I'd like to think our cabinets are comparable! My post was a pre-cautionary one. I'm set.

Compared to MS, places like CA, CT, MASS, NY, NJ, etc. are different planets. I'll never understand how they got that way.

I read a pretty good post about this on another forum and it seems the above is the general consensus with a lot of potential problems - and other 'unique' issues being identified by posters.
One of the most basic issues is for a large percentage of the shooting population simply not being aware of the new law and another being vendors who are 'secondary' retailers of guns and ammo (smaller. Rural stores) also not being aware of it.
The law also opens up the potential for 'alternative' methods for obtaining (or selling) ammo - and some not necessarily legal.....

HOLD YOUR HORSES.CA DOJ Submits Purposed Regulations Regarding Upcoming Ammunition Transfer Background Check Requirements to Office of Administrative Law for review. Beginning July 1st, 2019 all ammunition transaction will be subject to a background check requirement. In order to implement this requirement, the Ca. DOJ must first adopt necessary regulations which as of today, have been submitted to the OAL for review. OAL has until July 1st to approve or deny DOJ purposed regulations. More information go to CRPA; California Rifle & Pistol Association.

Best of luck, hope it all works out. I get a background check daily by the RCMP. Part of the routine of having a handgun license. They run the database of legal handgun owners every day looking for any red flags.
