the only HSM ammo I've used is their 45-70 Cowboy Action and Dangerous Game Loads .... they both chamber and perform flawlessly in our Henry .... as to black bear, boar and deer hunting with a 44 Mag, I can speak from first hand experience that our loads using Nosler 240 gr JHP's and in smaller numbers their SP's have really worked well for us .... I do understand the reasoning behind the need for penetration when hunting thick bodied big game .... in this regard, I come from an old school point of view drilled into me by my Grandfather over 50 years ago .... he hunted with a Model 94 30-30 .... when some of his friends switched to 30-06's and touted bullets passing through and traveling on down range, he'd always say the energy that bullet expended after exiting was wasted .... he wanted his bullets to expend all of its energy within his target .... with a behind the front shoulder shot, I've never had one of our 44 mag's pass all the way through any of the larger bear or boar we've taken .... what they did was mushroom as they took out heart, lungs and other vital organs .... that isn't to say, a 44 mag would be my first choice when going after grizzly class bears but having one along as a backup would be comforting

At 25 yds, velocity is 1200 fps, energy is 575. This seems in line with the HSM loads. Its those Hornady loads that seem all out of whack. Where did they get those numbers?

It really depends what length pipe your putting them through:

Redthies, all very true. But, Hornady doesn't mention on that clip on p.2 about barrel length. That was my concern.
Know what you're saying tho.

Oh I get it Tom. I looked at a bunch of other .357 data that corresponds with the lower power. It isn’t until I specifically looked for .357 AND carbine that the higher power loads showed up again.

I have run the 325gr WFN load in the 45 colt. You know it when you touch one off. I wouldn't want to shoot them in a non-bisley grip frame but they are fine with the bisley.

I've spent a lot of time in the Arctic, and have talked with hunting guides, protection hunters, and gun shop owners mainly in Kodiak AK. The guides and store owners will tell you , that if your using a .44 for Grizz , you should shave the front site down smooth, so when the Grizz sticks it up your -ss it won't hurt as much. Lol.
We had a guy on the Icebreaker I was on, and his only job was to protect the scientists when they were on the ice taking core samples. He would find a nice high spot on a piece of ice and keep an eye out for polar bears. He said he usually just shoots around them to scare them off. I asked him what weapon he used, and he told me he uses a Remington 7400 auto 30.06 with 220 grain soft points. Said you needed to break down the bears locomotive properties. They will charge. He also told me 1 shot kills are a myth, and for the most part you have to keep shooting and hold your ground while their charging. The job sounded cool, and the pay was excellent, but that vision of a polar bear charging you at 30 mph with only a 30 cal rifle, didn't exactly make me think of a career change at that point. I've shot a few polar bear in my day, but it was with a camera only. It was an automatic camera though.
