25% price hike coming

Post by GunnyGene » Tue Jun 27, 2023 10:26 am

Was informed yesterday by a reliable source with connections to Hodgdon and TSD, that the price of a basic component (nitrocellulose) is going up around 25%. The cost of gunpowder for reloading and factory ammo will likely increase by a similar percentage.

I suspect the price hike is at least partly due to sudden and dramatic demand (millions of new shooters, and a war going on) that is stressing production capacity.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Hmmm, I’ve been seeing lots of powder on store shelves but haven’t bought any. Might have to change my thinking. Of course the one I want 2400 is never seen but thankfully I have a couple of pounds on hand. Of course if I don’t get my butt to the range what difference does it make.

One nice thing about shooting my Rolling Block 45-70 is that ammo, powder, primers etc. lasts a long time. I have several pounds of black powder and found that it makes very accurate loads when used in a duplex load that is a few grain of slow smokeless next to the primer and the rest ffg. I c an shoot 30 or 40 shots without using a blow tube or wiping the barrel.

Eight lb. of Unique is like hitting the jackpot. If I would have kept records of game harvested with my Sako 222 and my Remington 700 223 I would be embarrassed to tell any one. From squirrels, rabbits to turkeys and everything in between in small game season and fox, coons and porcupines in winter time hunting the small cartridges loaded with Unique and 50 gr Sierra bullets works great. More accurate than any Hornet I ever owned with velocities in the 2400 -2500 fps range with 50 gr bullets instead of 40 gr. like the Hornet and much better brass for reloading. 9 grs in 222 and 10 in the 223. At 10 grs. you can load 700 rounds from one pound. I have also loaded reduced loads in my Marlin Zane Grey 30-30 with Unique. Congrats BigAl on your purchase of a hard to find powder. At least in my area.

I remember when you ordered that Al, glad it showed up.
I have just under 5 lbs. of it myself, it will definitely work in a multiple of calibers.
I'd like to stumble across some more Red dot as it is getting pretty low. :(
