I need support!

Post by Sir Henry » Fri Feb 21, 2020 8:44 pm

Or should I say supports. I will be putting ammo in the green room and am concerned the floor can take the weight. The tool boxes and safes are not light either so I need to make double sure.

The cross supports are 14 feet across and I think a mid support on each runner is in order. It would not be expensive just a lot of physical work. I can stand up in this space.

Gene,
IMO, I think you are ok as is, however I have wondered about my extra room where my 24 gun safe resides. The house was built in 1950. The safe is 650 lbs empty, and believe me, it aint empty anymore. It does sit in a corner which IS structurally the strongest area of the room. No indication of problems yet. No mid support is gonna be any stronger than what is already there unless you sister added boards or LVL's, ( laminate beams ) from one side of the foundation to the other support beams.

I see all the support for supports already in your OP, Gene. Making it "double sure" is the way I always work.

You could put a 4X4 on the footer on each side and set in a beam of 2X6 (or 8 )sandwiched with plywood( glued and screwed ) under the floor joists. I built some in the living room and kitchen to take the sag out of the ceiling caused by the long joists, and being 70 some years old.. Put in place and jacked it up to install shims on the upright a little bit at a time so the plaster did not crack. Laminated beams are not expensive to make and the plywood, which is cross laminated, makes these pretty stiff.

Here is my beam, raised 1-1/2" over 1 year. Allow time for everything to settle before jacking up another 1/2". When done I will use steel strapping to bind cross beam in place and cover with 1X for the finished beam effect.

I don’t need anything that elaborate or to raise the floor. Just prevent it from falling.

Great that you engineered it and allowed for it to settle. What is your expanse?

My room dimensions are 10’ 6” by 13’ 8” and the supports are 14’ by 17’ 4”. One 10’ 6” wall is half way of the supports. The safe, tool box and ammo cans that will go under the quarter table is mid support.

Only a few drawers are filled. I haven’t loaded all the tools yet so the current weight isn’t extreme.

So before I can continue to fill this room I need to go under the house for a few hours each day. My one man union guarantees I only work two hours a day on heavy lifting.

This room is 10' wide and 18' long to the next bearing wall so this support is 9' from each load bearing wall.

Thanks. My walls are not under the supports because the inside walls are not load barring. I might get away with no braces but I would always worry about it.

I’ll post pictures as I go but it might be a week or two.

Used tubes of construction adhesive liberally to the 3/4" plywood to make the beam and screwed them together firmly to bond properly . Have fun!
