Ag Building Corner Rebuild
Re: Ag Building Corner Rebuild
Been holding off on picture updates. The temp bracing clutters up the pictures and makes it hard to discern progress. Wed I got the big door opening framed in and on Thur a good portion of the west wall section framed up. Today I finished up the west wall framing and handed off the power line from the old west wall section to the new. Sat I expect to demo the rest of the old west wall section and remove the temp bracing behind the big door. That will give a clearer view for good pictures. Then maybe by Sunday start working on the cord and web of the trusses. The span is already in place.

Today's pictures. All old wood and temp bracing finally removed. Was going to start on the truss's tomorrow, but the boss said I needed to take a rest. Boss doesn't like me coming in ragged and too tired to take a shower.

it appears that you are working alone on this project .... if that's the case, I openly admit to being in awe .... no matter, nicely done .... enjoying following your progress

Yup, working solo also means slow going. As mentioned before a lot of time goes into making temporary lift thingys and tie-downs. Going up an down ladders doing it makes for tired calves and knees. Going up and down bouncy ladders used to bother me. Got used to it. Moving and setting a ladder, have to absolutely make sure the ladder has firm footing before going up and that there are obstructions that can be used as tilt blocks in case of slippage.JEBar wrote:it appears that you are working alone on this project ....
Tomorrow I expect to install the stringers that go horizontally across the top of the trusses. Then will be ready for the metal roof on top of them. Although I know how I would do it, I have not put on a metal roof solo before. Had my son help last time.

Re: Ag Building Corner Rebuild
I haven't been working on this project very much the past few days. Had other things that needed doing and my knees, calves and ankles needed a rest. They get the workout going up and down the ladders. So to stay off the ladders a while I put in erosion block at the base of the west wall (no picture). Then went about putting up the horizontal stringers across the tops of the trusses, followed by a temporary sheet metal block above where the gutter will be to prevent the loose metal roof from sliding off while I'm try to screw it down.

Solo work can be kinda tough sometimes, especially with the scope of your project. I've been there/done that with smaller wood projects, and was always glad my wife was around to lend a hand from time-to-time.
Also found out as I got older, and worked solo at times, why my Dad so often "volunteered" us boys at home whenever he did his house or garage renovations or upkeep projects. Those second set of hands really do help a lot.
Your comment, " Going up and down bouncy ladders used to bother me," reminded me of a funny incident while I was doing some gable work on my two-story KS house years ago. Lengthy, "swaying" ladders always bothered me a lot, too. Not too fond of heights in general. I was installing a 40" whole house fan in our early 1900s house, Because there were no soffet vents, best I could do to create the proper air flow was to cut into the gables (above the second story) and install a gable vent on either side of the house. When I started the first one, my wife came outside and stood at the bottom of the ladder the whole time I was working. I finally asked her, "what are you doing?" She said, "I just want to be here to catch you in case you fall."
BTW, I measured the height I was working at that day, and my head was just over 26' from the ground! That would have been some catch, wouldn't it?!? Still glad she was there; the moral support kept me steady.
So keep on being careful. Your project is lookin' good so far.
