Spring has sprung. Get out and shoot your Henry
What caliber to get next?
What caliber to get next?
Looking for suggestions and making a purchase in the next day or 2.
I have a .357 Henry. Already own a 30-30 Marlin so not interested in that. Not a fan of the Henry in .22. Great rifle but just not enough oomph for such a solid gun.
I'm a fan of the steel, round barrel designs. I'm leaning towards 45-70. The 5.56 seems interesting and I already buy that caliber for my AR.

As always, the first consideration is do you reload? The 45-70 is a great cartridge and I love it, but since we no longer reload, no 45-70 for us. It is insanely expensive to shoot factory 45-70 ammo. The 5.56/223 is the polar opposite. 223 is about the cheapest centerfire rifle ammo there is and compared to the 45-70, no recoil. One of my favorites. Shoot 223 in a CZ and our Low Wall single shot.

we have a CCH 45-70 that has proven to be a fine rifle .... as noted, firing factory ammo quickly gets expensive .... we load our own ammo and are able to do so at a reasonable price .... my personal favorite for a revolver cartridge is 44 Mag .... in a bottle neck rifle cartridge a Long Ranger 308 is well worth considering

Thinking about the Marlin Dark 45-70 being my next buy.

If you don't load your own ammo, then the cheapest center fire will most likely be a 44 mag.
I myself prefer the 45 colt, but factory ammo will be more expensive and harder to find.
As far as rifle calibers go I would say the 35 Rem. (one of my favorites) seeing how you already have the tried and true 30-30.

Re: What caliber to get next?
Personally, my first consideration would be what I intend to use it for.
