It has gone from “universally horrible” several years ago to “a crap shoot”. Some recent guns have fairly nice fit and finish, some are still having unacceptable problems. Short of stripping a new one down to pieces on the FFLs gun counter, you really won’t be able to know ahead of time. The mere fact that there is a dedicated Marlin Rant Forum should be enough warning....

New Remlin never again for me. Have one there customer service is nothing short of terrible. They dont look nice enough to me to put up with the frustration

But there are many different configurations of JM Marlins (and Winchesters) to be had. No warranty but their survival.
It is rare to see a used Henry.

All of this is Very true, but
several years back I found my BBB 44 used, before that I bought the H001 used but it was LNIB.
The previous owner of the 44 used it as it has a few dings in the furniture, and the brass has a nice patina.
But like you said few and far between.
I have several Marlins, and all were bought used.

I have 2 Marlins that are pre-Remlin. A 1956 Model 56 (my first gun) and a 1968 .30-30 saddle ring Texan. The 1968 is almost mint. Both are quite nice and far above the current crop of Marlins. Both of my Henry's are also very nice (AR7 and .357 CCH carbine). The Henrys are an equal to my pre-Remlin Marlins. Of course, the CCH .357 is the best looking one.

I visited my LGS, which has just about every model of Henry, Marlin and Rossi lever guns. The only X they had was a shotgun. I like it a lot, it looks great and feels great. I would rather have a stainless or AW finish, but the black “bluing” looks fine and I can live with it.
