Henry newbie with 45-70 questions

Grizzly populate the area where I hunt. I like my 45-70. Presently I have a Marlin GBL, and love it, other than some Remlin "quirks". I'm looking more seriously at the Henry's now they have the side gate, but I have questions... (And to leave the Remlin quirks behind).

Is there an option out there for a ghost ring sight (see comment on grizzly bears)? Is there a picatinny rail that can handle a long eye relief scope? What is the preferred method for reducing LOP? (I'm short and that isn't going to change. Most rifles are just too long for me). Any thoughts on when there will be options with other materials (either blued, stainless or case colour)? How about 18.5" or shorter barrels?

BTW - I did search and see reference to XS sights ghost ring but can't find details. Haven't found anything on long eye relief scopes on Henry's.

Welcome to the forum from CT. You might contact Skinner Sights (see the link in the upper right hand corner of this page) to ask about peep sights for the side gate Henrys, though you may get some answers from our members. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum and glad you joined us. I would also check with the Henry website as they offer some accessories up there also.

An earlier version of Henry lever actions (circa pre-2015?) came with a XS ghost ring peep sights, I have such a 30-30 that I found on a clearance rack, and I think I know where a 45-70 in that configuration is still in the rack. You might find one with a little searching. Those models also had the integral barrel band front sight; I like the current sight better, and may soon send my band off to Skinner to modify it for a dovetail front sight. I should also add that I did need to replace the lever on mine, due to it's "popping", of course, Henry sent me a new lever within a couple of days when I talked to them about it. Good luck with your soon to be yours Henry ;) .

I’m pretty sure Henry didn’t change the hole spacing on the receiver when they added the side gate, so anything that fits the standard models <should > fit the SG models. A quick call to the mothership should clear that up.

I’m in BC as well, and have a JM 1895GS as my griz gun. I mounted a RPP Cloverleaf peep on it. Skinner sights are fantastic as well, and I have an Express on my .357 and SGC. YOu can just unscrew the aperture from the Skinner and what you are left with is essentially a ghost ring.

Not that any of this matters since it is now illegal here to shoot a griz, so you will just have to hold still while he eats you. Try not to squirm too much!

The SG uses the same spacing as the .30-30, .45-70 series. The Weaver 63B. No need to call, the information is available on Henry's website.

Welcome from Alberta. I have a Viper scope on my Marlin SBL but they ship with picatinny rail and it's easy to install a scope. For my Henry 44, I have ordered Skinner sights as they look better than a scope. I use my Marlin in bear country for bear spray but you could get the Henry rail. Cabelas have them for 60 bucks. Then just install a scout scope so you can still see well with both eyes.
