I've been told (and have read) that that's one reason that nickel plated brass was first introduced for ammunition. It doesn't turn green like brass does (verdigris) from contact with leather belt loops.

The brass does react with the leather. Leave the cartridges in too long and the cases will corrode. Nickle cases would solve that issue.
