I suspect it is due to possibly 'bottoming out' the mag tube spring with the 8th round and resulting in the action popping open when the tube is pushed in to seat it.I can't remember exactly what the reason was to only load seven.

Re: Carbine Mag Tube Capacity
Below is an old post that discussed capacity. As I understand it, the round count is based on the rifle's ability to handle recoil safely.

Actions speak louder than words (Matthew 7:16-20).
Re: Carbine Mag Tube Capacity
I went through that thread, GFK, so thank you for the link. The most compelling statement I could find as this, from Henry, regarding a 45-70 specifically, but I guess would apply to a 45 Colt as well:
?\"Even if there is room for it, do not overload the magazine. .45-70 shells are heavy, and combined with the strong recoil force will beat the magazine components out of shape or even break them if you add more weight than the mag structures are designed for."

Put 8 in it, chamber one... and don't top it off.
Makes it easier to fully load without a lot of fuss.

Other than that how did the 45 colt shoot. Mine shoots good but the ejector is a little on the lazy side.

Re: Carbine Mag Tube Capacity
I would just load 7. My 1860 will hold 13 in the tube but I don't like to bottom that spring out. Metal fatigue happens anyway, I don't need to help it along.
