Wishing For A 35 Remington

A member on another forum posted the other day that he had emailed Henry asking them to make a lever gun in 35 Remington. I’ve been wishing for that for several years, and I also emailed them about that a couple of years ago.

The 35 Remington has a small but intensely loyal following. Almost anything a 30-30 can do, the 35 will do better. Like the 30-30, the 35 Remington is not a long range cartridge. For most hunting east of the Mississippi, though, it’s an excellent choice. It’s normally loaded with 200 grain roundnosed soft point bullets. 35 Remington users love the round for it’s accuracy, and particularly for its ability to drop game in its tracks. “Dead right there” is the phrase most commonly used by hunters who use 35 Remington.

Unfortunately, about the only firearm currently offered in 35 Remington is the Marlin 336. Even more unfortunate is that Remington still has not figured out how to consistently build good Marlin lever guns. My 336 in 35 Remington is a “JM” Marlin from the 1970’s.

A Henry in 35 Remington would be a welcome thing. I think that Henry could help ressurrect a very worthy cartridge.

Ditto, I'm a fan.
Have 3 at the moment 2 Marlins and a Savage pump.
One of the Marlin's I had shortened to 16.5".
An octagon barreled one would be cool.
I recently bought an octagon barrel from a member over where you are talking about.
Was thinking I could rebore it to 35 & build my own.

My son n law's grandfather has a Rem 600 Bolt action.

And your right it ain't a long ranger, but it sure is a thumper out to 150 yds. or so.
Never lost a deer shot with one, and only one ran more than 10 yds.

No 35 Rems in the safe, right now, but have owned several Marlins and an occasional Contender barrel in 35 Remington. It really is a great old cartridge, but it's struggling a bit. Be a shame to see it pass away. Hope Henry can be talked into making a 35.

I have a Remington 141 pump in .35 Rem, and sure would like to see Henry chamber it in both the lever action and single shot rifles. It is a bit of an old school cartridge, but, so is the 45-70, and look how many fans it has. In old sporting magazines, you see ads for Remington Model 8 rifles in the .35 Rem.being shown as good for Moose and Grizzly Bears .

I have often thought that the 35 Remington would be right at home in between the 30-30 and the 45-70. It’s still a pretty popular round in the woods around here.

Years back I would bet there was more 35's being used in Pa. deer and bear season than any other state in the country. They still do the job on game even if they are not one of the super duper canyon blaster magnums a lot of guys use now. Pa. hunters have always been fond of the lever and pumps in 35 for deer and bear season. My brother is a Remington pump gun fan and has several of the carbine 760's in 308 and 30-06. Quite a few years ago he won one of the special runs Remington done in their pump carbine in 35 and since he has had it he has never used the 308 or the '06 again. He does really well with the factory Hornady gummy tip bullet load. My younger brother has a 336 Marlin 35 Remington with beautiful wood that he uses for deer with the 200 gr. core-lokt bullet and the deer just go down when hit with that bullet. I have two Marlin 35's and they stay home while I carry the Marlin 444. Need to probably sell one of those and make room for something else.

I well remember back in the early 60's to early 70's sitting in front of a huge fireplace (5' logs) at my grandfather's bear/boar hunting club in the Western NC mountains .... had to have a roaring fire to knock the chill off in old house we called a hunting lodge .... as one might expect, guns and calibers were often discussed .... back then there weren't as many to discuss .... 30-30, 35, 30-06, 308, 444 were among them .... most of the hunters used 30-30's .... as I remember there were only a couple of us using 308's .... most of the lever actions were 30-30 Winchesters & 35 Marlins, here again as I remember I had the only BLR .... there were also a good number of fellows who threw their 12 gauges into the discussion .... this thread has brought back some good memories

Years ago (about 30!) when I hunted in PA, I used a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. While everyone else had an '06 or .30-30, I was the odd duck. One season we were joined by an older gentleman that was completely deaf. He could read lips quite well, though. He asked me one morning what caliber I was using. As I mouthed the words '35 Remington' his face lit up with a look of approval I have rarely seen since. He knew I had a winner. Took my very first deer with that rifle, and several in the years after. Never had to track more than a few yards. A Henry 35 would be a hit.
