Taking bolt out to clean barrel

Post by Swigs » Sat Jun 30, 2018 12:30 pm

Have never taken apart my bb44 mag before. To remove bolt do you have to take trigger group apart also.

If it's anything like my H010 the answer is no. Lower the lever, remove the lever screw. Pull the lever free from the rifle then remove the bolt. Be careful to not lose the ejector. The bolt holds it in place. Easy-Peasy!

It's easy but there are several steps involved.

I took mine completely apart when I got it just because I've always done a thorough cleaning of any new firearm I purchase. Wasn't hard, watched the Henry site video and another couple on youtube.

The youtube vids are a little better since you can pause and rewind them, he did say to install the trigger group and the lever at the same time and I found it easier to install the trigger group and then the lever.

For routine barrel cleaning I put it in my rifle holder upside down so gunk is not falling into the mechanism and clean it from the muzzle but I do use a brass muzzle guard.

I'm more worried about wear and tear on screws/threads from constant removal of the bolt, than any dirt possibly getting into the action when cleaning from the muzzle. I clean the action available through the ejection port last anyway.

I rarely disassemble to clean. When I can't seem to get the action clean from the outside anymore, then I take it apart.

As for cleaning the barrel, I don't want dirty solvent laced gunk from the barrel getting into the receiver so I clean from the receiver and out through the muzzle.
I first run a dry bore snake from the receiver and out the muzzle to draw out loose stuff.
Then from the muzzle insert a cleaning rod without a patch.
Through the ejector port work a dry swab onto the end of the cleaning rod.
With an eye dropper add cleaning solvent to the swab, just enough to soak the swab.
Pull the cleaning rod/swab out through the muzzle.
Repeat the rod/swab steps until the swab comes out clean or satisfied its clean enough.
Lastly do the rod/swab step without solvent instead using just enough gun oil to dampen the swab.

I use one of these after running a saturated swab down the barrel, let the solvent soak for a while, run a brass brush up and down a few times, the Rem-Squeeg is one way, can only be pulled though so I put my rod down the muzzle, use a some tweezers to attach the Rem-Squeeg and pull it out (you could also use a cable cleaning system). One pass with the Rem-Squeeg gets 99% of the loose gunk. With the rifle upside down if you don't get carried away with the amount of solvent used and slow down when the brush enters the breach you will get no gunk in the action. Or you could attach all the cleaning items to your rod or cable after running them down the barrel and only pull them toward the muzzle.

I would agree that removing the lever everytime you clean might lead to premature wear on the lever screw.
