howdy and quick question

Post by bmsma » Sun Jun 17, 2018 10:25 am

morning all:
currently have a evil roy 22mag, fine plinking rifle.

hada big boy 357 carbine "16.5 barrel" was a very nice rifle, i stupidly did some trading for another hobby. but very light to no recoil with 125 jhp 357's.

will be replacing it within the next month or so and going with the 20 in barrel this time to get the round count to 10.

am leaning towards the 45 long colt and was wondering the recoil difference in recoil between the 357, 44 lc and 44 mag, in medium loads. not cowboy loads or hot loads.
i also have started reloading and i know that what makes the 45 lc shine.

this will mostly be a range/plinker with a little hunting thrown in. deer , smaller hog under 50-75 yards...

the new cch are to good looking to not have one,

anyway thanks all
Troy

the 357 would more than likely do everything i will be doing but i have a rossi 357 that i use in sass and it kinda fills that niche

so what do you all think of your 45lc 's ??

_WELCOME!_.jpg
Greetings from the Show-Me-State, Troy!
Good questions for a first post.
There are Forum members who own the Henry .45LC, and you should hear back. I have a BBS .357 Carbine, so can't help you on the recoil....other than the very light felt recoil when shooting a .357! ;)
Enjoy your Forum wanderings....lots of good stuff here, and much info for reloaders, too.

thanks PT, ans the 357 recoil in the 16.5 octagon is extremely light, im figuring the 45lc in the 20 wont be much harder. where in mo are you ? i spent 8 years up around warrensburg at Whitman AFB back in the late 80's early 90's. My oldest son lives up north in unionville. the bad part of mo was the venison, after hunting up there and eating that north mo white tail corn fed it hard to eat oklahoma deer unless its jerky :)

Troy,

Your son lives about 150 miles northeast of my place. I'm at the northern part of KCMO in an area called the Northland. It's about 15 miles due north of downtown KC, and I'm 15 minutes east of KCI airport.

MO is a gr8 st8 to live in for a variety of reasons, and we enjoy good opportunities for the hunting & shooting sports here, too. I've hunted whitetail deer at my son's-in-law property in Hamilton, MO (he has 20 acres and a training/shooting range there). I've had some very tasty ground venison over the recent years! My oldest daughter really makes a very good chili dish!!

Hey Troy - Welcome to the forum from the Shenandoah Valley, VA. If you go with a 20" CCH BigBoy in 45LC, recoil will not be an issue. That's a pretty heavy rifle (probably over 9lbs fully loaded with 45LC) and it's got a nice recoil pad. We don't own any 45LC Henrys, but we do have a Henry 357Mag, numerous Henry 44Mag's and one 45LC Marlin 1894CB which is very similar to a Henry. Shooting typical 45LC factory loads (Win 255g RN, AE 225g JHP) out of the Marlin is like shooting 44Spec out of the 44Mag Henrys or 38Spec out of the 357Mag - recoil is almost nothing. The biggest downside with 45LC is the price of the ammo - if you are going to reload that's not as big of an issue and 45LC can be a lot of fun to plink with and yet still powerful enough to hunt deer/hog with....

thanks all:

and after some more reading and talking to a cpl other sass guys at church im going to have to figure the 44mag back in.

for 95 percent of what ill be doing with this BB the 357 mag would work fine and i already reload for it,

the 45 Colt has a mystique about the caliber , that my real interest is the fact its a 45 colt, its iconic. would also need dies

the 44 mag could do anything ill ever need it to, ill need dies to reload but that not a big deal. my reason for discounting it is recoil, and by that im talking 100-150 round range day. but some of the charts im reading and opinion im hearing is with mild loads she is int much different than the 45 colt loaded up.

and PT i know where you at kinda, when i got out of the service i went to work for the cable company and took care of plattsburg, gower, and maysville, i was just leaving when the flood hit in 92/93 ?? when elwood and wathena wound up in the river in norht kc

Troy

and the henry website specs the 20inc 44mag cch at 7.8 pounds, but in not what one would call petite so recoil might not be a big factor.
