H009, ACCURACY ???

Post by Slugnut » Sat Jun 16, 2018 9:37 am

I'm thinking of getting the H009 (30/30) round barrel steel and I was wondering if anyone has had issues with grouping. With either it be factory or reloads. My Marlin 336 will group 1" with 5 shots at 50yds. off a bench/bags (reloads), while my XLR with make 1 hole (5 shots) with factory Federal, blue box, with the same set-up. If any one reloads, maybe you could share their recipes with me. The 336 has the MG rifling (ROT of 1-10 ?), while the XLR has Ballard and ROT of 1-12. The H009 has Ballard with a ROT of 1-12. Looking forward to your replies.

I love micro-groove in the .22s, but have heard it isn't as effective in centerfire, maybe that is so. I don't think you will have a problem h009, but I don't think they are target rifles either and probably won't guarantee 1 MOA if that is your requirement.
Sounds like the Marlin is shooting 2 MOA which is quite respectable.

Slugnut, I had an H009 steel .30-30 back in 2014. Unfortunately, it was during about a year's time when Henry was really challenged by the ammo loading problem with that model rifle. The lever kept on popping open when loading, no matter how many rounds went down the tube. I never kept mine as Henry purchased it back. I'm glad they finally fixed the problem and got the H009 back up to speed.

So I can't specifically answer your question about how an H009 would do when going for a small group size. But I'd agree with Henry88. Nothing in HRAC's marketing material (particularly the description of this rifle on their web site) lends itself that it would be "a target rifle." HRAC promotes its usage as a deer-hunting rifle. That is how I evaluated the .30-30 four years ago, is why I bought one, and would do the same now if I were looking for that caliber to hunt deer. Sorry I can't be of more help...just my perspective based on how/why I bought the H009. Still, it is a Henry rifle and I know it would shoot well, and could be "trained" to shoot well, too, with a good owner's help!! ;)

Thank you, guys for advice and experience. I'm not really asking if the H009 is a target shooter, but rather be comparable to the Marlin, ie, 1" at 50yds. off bench/bags with factory ammo and I can twek those groups with my reloads. I just wanted to see if this model had any issues with accuracy.

I got close with my H009B Octagon on 4in targets at 50yds. http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=4505.
I believe I could have done better if I had bags or a stand. A round barrel being lighter and hence maybe more recoil might be harder to reposition consistently on the next shot for that tight of grouping.

My husband loves his HENRY (H009) 30-30 rifle!

It is very, very accurate! There is no scope on this rifle. He has a HENRY 45-70 rifle too.

He reloads for all of his firearms but he has used a bit of 30-30 factory ammo in this HENRY H009 rifle too. He used Federal and Remington brands in 150 grain and 170 grain ammo. He is getting VERY good results with some BearTooth cast bullets (Idaho) too. The BT bullets are in another grain. He used Hornady for his other 30-30 reloading bullets. He shot this rifle last week.

He has been going to the range almost every day or every other day after he walks. He alternated shooting his HENRY and his Marlin 30-30 rifles. Plus he shot several CZ bolt action rifles in 22lr.

He only kept 2 of his Made in CT Marlin lever action rifles and they are accurate too. Classic 45-70 and a 336SS (30-30). (His and her downsizing and BIG caliber reduction in ALL of our firearms.)

He really, really LIKES his HENRY firearms - present ones and past ones in other calibers.

Slugnut,
Maybe you posted a separate thread and if so, I'm sorry I missed it, but just checking to see how you're liking your 30-30...?

ESquared, To tell you the truth in 3 words- I love it ! The looks, feel, balance, accuracy, FTF, etc. What's not to like about this rifle. It's the perfect companion to my Henry 41mag. and 22. Thanx for asking.

Glad to hear another "happy ending" to a Henry rifle purchase. :D
The .30-30 caliber is a cool 8-) choice for whenever you head out on your next deer hunt!
Enjoy.
