Spring has sprung. Get out and shoot your Henry
Second Henry
Second Henry
I went to buy a 30-30 in a Henry this morning. Sale price was gone but I found two more Henry's in another store chambered in 357 mag which was my second choice. I am going to hunt deer with this and don't expect anything over a 100 yard shot. Hit in the right spot I have no concerns as I took one at 90 yards a few years ago with a Rossi that I hated and modified everything on it to get it to cycle. I'm a little confused as both are priced the same 700.00 and one is big boy Classic in brass and the other is the round barrel big boy steel. I would think the steel should be cheaper. Only thing I liked on it was rifle slings it has. I can get he 30-30 from other store but will run me around 800 out the door. I reload for both and have about 1000 rounds of 357 brass and maybe 100 of 30-30 brass. I'm going to switch to cast bullets whichever route I go. I only have 45colt right now but am wanting to add just one more lever. Any suggestions. A few JM stamped Marlins in 30-30 and 35 Remington made in Conneticut but actions on Henry are like my Tikkas. Slick as butter.

Henry doesn't chamber the 35 Remmy.2guns wrote: Any suggestions. A few JM stamped Marlins in 30-30 and 35 Remington made in Conneticut but actions on Henry are like my Tikkas. Slick as butter.

Thats a conundrum you have on you hands and I am a fan of both calibers (and have them both) but if it were me I would go with the steel Henry in .357. Based on what you are saying (and that you reload) I believe the .357 will give you the versatility you want and a touch less expensive to load than the 30-30. I would question the price issue and maybe check the MSRP of both to be able to show a differential in them.

Re: Second Henry
I like the steel for a hunting rifle. If cowboy action shooting I would go brass but no frills for this one it's going to work. buds is around $20.00 cheaper. Time I pay FFL costs the same. I can't talk them down because it's new. They won't budge. 158 grain bullet out of 357 puts a wallop on deer. I threw all my 38 brass away when I had the Rossi. It wouldn't cycle it half the time. I just downloaded 357 for the wife in her Lady Smith but she finally got used to full power loads. I'd like to find it around 75-100 cheaper though.

You will see much better results with shooting cast out of the 357 than the 30-30. I also think you will get much more use out of the 357. Its good for fun shooting as well as hunting. The brass model will also be heavier than the steel. Plinking with the steel will be easier on the shoulders. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
