A few Q's on the new Henry..

Post by Schneeky » Sat Mar 03, 2018 12:38 pm

H012AW 44M/S
Can the bolt be easily removed for cleaning (i. e. without disassembling the receiver)? I thought prior to purchasing I had read that a simple removal of the lever would facilitate this. But couldn't make that happen when I tried. Hammer got in the way by this much.

Is there a bore guide available for this rifle?

Any special considerations for running lead?

Anybody wanna share some upper mid-ish 240gr lead loads for hogs?

Front sight is a direct dovetail (.375" base). What options for replacements/height adjustments with these?

Any Henry specific quirks I should be aware of prior to loading/shooting?

I've shot it once out at my back door chronograph station but that's just a few yards for load checking here at the house. It made quite the impressive spray of clay and mulch with a factory Federal 240(1720fps, BTW). Didn't wanna pop off any more of those as I plan to run coated lead barring any reason why I shouldn't. Thanks, much. d:^) Schneeks..

Hey Schneeky - that bolt should come out with the lever out - did you pull the hammer all the way down when you tried it? Got me curious - I'll go try it on our H012AW.

Just tried it - had to hold the hammer all the way down and the bolt slid right out....

Thankyasir!
I was pretty sure I did. But mebbe I was limp-wristing it since it's new and all.
FWIW it's also a Gen2. Not really sure what that actually means. d:^) Schneeks..

Not really sure what Gen2 is either, but ours is about 1 yr old - probably same as yours - except it still has the rubber buttpad on.....

Quote from an eBay ad:
Note: Henry 2nd Generation Big Boy Rifles start with the following serial numbers; H006 = BB004722, H006M = BB0015530M, H006C = BB0021188C
Not sure how it translates to an H012. And at Bud's they say it's "September 2011 and later". Other entries seem to suggest the difference may be the factory tapping for scope mounts.
Usually a purchase is researched ad nauseum if it's something new to me. But this one was tripped over in one of Momma's buying moods and it was sortofa quick decision.
It's really tempting to break out the files again  . But I'm hoping I'm just being ignorant so thougtht I'd ask. It's only a few thousandths from being easier access.
Here's what I see:

That's kind of a bummer - I'd say go with the files and take a little off the top of the hammer, but if you do, you'll probably file off the silver coating. Maybe you can get by with just filing a shallow "groove" on the hammer to squeak that bolt by...

Hmmmm. That's weird. Does it look exactly like the pic I took of mine in that position?
Or did I get somethin' "special" again? d:^) Schneeks..

It looks like your pic, but there's about 1/32" gap between the bolt and hammer when I hold the hammer all the way back, so the bolt slides right on out. I think you may something "special" there... We've got a BBS 44 Carbine that's kind of like that - the bolt doesn't come out all the way - I'll probably end up filing the hammer a bit.

Could I bother you to take a pic of yours in the same position as mine is? Henry TS wants me to send it in for a look-see, but I've got hoggin ta do for another month or so. I'd much rather just swap out a part here if I did indeed get something "special". Thanks. d:^) Schneeks..
