That looks problematic to me, when you are drilling non standard holes, but for the pilot it should be OK. But you run the risk of having chips bind inside it instead of spilling freely to the side, which could break the bit... Getting a busted bit out of your gun would be unpleasant. A drill press, even a really cheap one, would be better.

I have a drill press but because of the contours on the receiver, I had a hard time getting a stable perpendicular mount. Tap oil, pull bit about 4 times to clear chips, no problems.
