'Repurposing' Stuff

Post by Mistered » Tue Dec 24, 2019 7:25 pm

Been doing some rearranging, getting rid of stuff (too much furniture) but needing a gun maintenance bench in the house.
So I had an old heavy duty entertainment center and when turned sideways I will be able to mount an an old laminated bed headboard and footer on it, lower the whole thing by about 8" or so and I have my bench!
Whatta ya think?

Looks like a good standing height bench. Maybe just get a good rolling stool.

It looks great. 8-)

The only thing I might do is get a piece of 1/4 or 3/8 ply to make a back, with a cut out for the wall sockets.... Only if you find it's not stable enough if you decide to clamp a press to it, a vise, or need to whack things on it sith a mallet. (Or attached a gun vise an find it moves when you clean the bores.) My very first bench was repurposed, and did the hula with any stress. So, I know from experience this makes a huge difference after you run a line of screws down all four verticals and across each edge. Rock solid.

I like this idea and may consider it.
The entertainment center is incredibly strong as it is and I believe it will be a sturdy enough base to support most 'medium' work (sight swaps, light vise work etc.) and possibly more. Its pretty sturdy.

I will have to reduce the height however and plan to remove the 'base' (which is actually a side) cut the four panels down about 8" and reinstall the base. 8" off will give me good standing height as well as a barstool I have for 'sitting' work.

Personally, I would definitely add the plywood sheet on the back. No chance for wobble then.
