Re: Hay Day
The blood work came back on Badger. He has "Cushings" disease, which is actually a malfunction of the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. Older horse thing. Brain does not send proper signals to manage some of the normal functions like winter coat, shedding it, some Cushings horses grow a weird thick curly hair coat. 2 springs ago, he grew a gigantic buffalo coat for winter and then it just fell off in almost 1 piece a couple of days in the spring. Makes sense now, horses with this are susceptible to lameness, and has to go on meds to manage it. Basically as drug called pergolide. Daily pill. Watch the lush grass, careful with cuts that don't heal as infection is an issue with Cushings. Also weight loss and muscle loss. He eats everything in sight so weight is not an issue right now. Badger loves his hay. Anyhow, we will get on it this week. He can still be ridden as long as he's not sore, and he seems good right now.

Re: Hay Day
Sorry to read about Badger's age related issues, RR. Many of us can relate all too well to the painful patina that age brings to all of us. Badger is a fortunate horse to be cared for and loved. He's more than just a cowboy's ride... on this forum, he's become a legend. Thanks for sharing him with us.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Maybe he needs a beer. I remember a song whiskey for my men and beer for my horses.

Re: Hay Day
Just read your post on Badger's med testing. Good to know, but hard to know at the same time. Glad you have the ways to help Badger through this "older horse thing."
I've noted before in other threads that it's not a "golden" time; rather, these years I've called "Tarnished Brass." Still, a nice patina is okay, too.
Best of all is to hear Badger is good at this time, and you can still ride together as long as he is able. Enjoy those rides...both of you.
Take care.
