gun rack

Post by The Wiz » Fri Apr 05, 2019 2:01 pm

I have bought two sets of gun hooks to mount my two Henry's. My question is where should the rifles rest on the hooks? Specifically where on the stock and should it rest on the fore arm or on the barrel/tube. Or is it just of matter of taste. :?

One should be just aft of the lever so that the lever keeps it from sliding. The other should be positioned so the barrel is level. Precisely where along the length of the forestock/barrel is pretty much up to you, but I like to have approx the same length of buttstock and barrel protruding from the hooks, just to achieve a balanced appearance. :)

No Henry's in this pic, but you get the idea. :)

Nice layout and good looking lumber. Is that a Very pistol bottom center?

Yes. "Very" is a generic term for a number of different designs of flare guns. This one is a 1916 British Queens Mark , 1" made by Cogswell & Harrison, that was my fathers from WWII. The Navy Officers sword was his also. The Katana is a Okinawa trophy captured by another relative.

I was going to ask about the Katana. It’s not in keeping with the rest, but clearly has a deserved place!

:) Other folks - including visiting friends and relatives have commented on that also. Once a very young great nephew (5 yo), was intrigued by it. He asked if that was a real "Ninja" sword. So rather than correct him I just said yes and handed it to him to feel the weight. His eyes got big and "Wow, it's really heavy!"

It's not a traditional family or ceremonial blade of course, but is a well made hammer forged factory sword made around 1937 or so - technically a Type 94 shin guntō.

Definitely not a toy, and there is some staining on the blade. The blade is approx 5/16" at it's thickest point, weigh's about 3lbs, and is well balanced.

The Japanese have some serious skills in blade making, and they do a great job on cars too. I would not however, have enjoyed spending any time in the Pacific in the early to mid 1940s.

Indeed. And the best ones can run up to $2000. Check out these custom blades by various makers: :)
